Found one locally at what I believe to be a good price. Four hole JCM800 50 watter in very clean unmodded condition.
Never seen one before. Serial # dates it at 1987 so it's the three cap can version.

Whats the thinking on these? Do they sound like a typical 800 or more vintage? Are they a good candidate for modding?

I just modded a 100w version of this rare amp and it sounds pretty good.
Great amps for sure.

 I saw your post afterI posted.

Caps on the 50w I thought were always the same, the 100w had them reduced....
They are great and undervalued amps, I found an 86 1959 for 500 not too long ago.
Grab it!

You're right about the caps. I'm learning...

Yep these are great amps for modding, I own a JCM800 1987 with Fortin's Cali mod, sounds pretty awesome!

If it has been modified I would not hesitate to mod. If it is clean there is not a lot of amps stock. Kind of like putting a boob job on a 80 year old women. They don't need a master or anything else. The 50 watt because it has lower plate voltage starts to distort very early on the volume. I don't even use attenuation when playing with a band. A boost or overdrive if I need more gain.

They are great amps , but they are a totally different monster than a 2203/2204 JCM 800 . They are closer to a SL / SB. Loud an clean. No overdrive on tap , unless you crank them WAAAAY up . Great platform for modding though. They are typically the least sought after amps of that era.
