So I see this guitar and think, way too low a price for what it is. I email the guy about where it was made and he tells me "a garage in upstate NY" although an earlier ad said it was made in Germany! Bullshit! It was made in Wuhan, China!!

Me - "What luthier made the explorer, local? Do you have any documentation for the guitar? I’m interested but I want to make sure of what I’m buying, thanks, John."

Him - "It was built by a “garage” luthier upstate.
What do you mean by documentation? Pictures of the building process? No, I don’t have. "

Me - "Not Germany? http://www.jlaforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=511081170

I’m still interested though, $450?"

Him - "Not sure where did you get this listing, I did not post anywhere but on Craigslist.
So if you are reading a fake listing and contacting and lowballing me, save your time."

Here's his first ad from March
From JLA Forums - http://www.jlaforums.com/viewtopic.php? ... 170Luthier built style ESP MX-250 Man to wolf James Hetfield

Here's his new ad posted yesterday, man I wanted this guitar bad, from CL - https://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/msg/ ... 38666.html

Guitar plays great, neck straight, beautiful guitar. There are few minor signs of use, there is only one chip and pictured, very small. Excellent condition, excellent guitar. Get your Metallica TONE!

Important, this is not an ESP, this is a luthier built guitar.

No shipping, only personal pick up. I can't provide an amp, the guitar is currently in my storage unit as I can't have it at home due to space. Social distancing is required, please wear a mask. Price is FIRM. I paid well over 1k on everything.

I wouldn't risk it, man.

Maybe if you could take your own "portable" amp to confirm that the wiring's all-good, but otherwise I wouldn't trust the guy.

So if it's personal pick up only, why not go see it?
Inlays look good...
On the other hand, why can't he name the luthier in Germany?

Does a handbuilt 1000% accurate artist guitar from Germany usually cost "well over $1K"? Seems like it would be more. And then sell it for $450...even after a "new Tusq nut"? Def seems fishy and I would see if it has tuning issues since he just got a new Tusq nut and is now selling.

I'm in NYC, I've seen that ad before. Yeah I'd avoid at all costs. If he can't tell you who built it (as a commissioned build) then something stinks.

Could be a bait 'N' switch scenario..... especially right now I would be wary of the too good to be true CL ads, but YMMV! If you got backup and really want to look at it it might be worth $450. Alot of Chinese Chibson's being sold on CL as of late here in Chicago.

I have read alot of reviews of the CHibson guitars having inoperable truss rods, spongy wood necks. Most ads says new electronics and hardware, new nuts, been to the luthier to be setup and after all that investment they are up for sale for a song in CL........................you can come to your own conclusion here... I know what mine is. ;)

Sounds too shady. Also, who can't have a guitar at home due to "space"? Even the smallest NYC apartments I have ever seen, you can still have a room to store a guitar.

I have played probably...10 Chibsons in my day. Only one didn't have major issues that popped up after time, and it still sounded like shit. People just GOTTA HAVE that Gibson name on the headstock, even if it means it's a piece of Chinese made crap and totally fake. Almost every Epiphone plays better, but nah man. Gotta have that "name".  The people that buy these are only fooling one person, themselves..or sadly the poor sucker they lie to and flip it to for a huge profit that doesn't know any better.

Truth....I'd love to know how many people out there have a fake Les Paul and don't even know it (probably a lot more than you'd think)

Man, where do I start?

Due to my work, I'm kind of a paranoid, non-trusting person (good or bad I guess). I am good at reading people, reading situations, etc.

Just my two cents on some stuff. I may be way off on this but just giving my opinion:

- Price. There is no way a hand-carved, German-made guitar, especially a Metallica one, is going to sell for the same price as a Korean Metallica guitar. No way.

- Verbiage. I won't even get into the "Get your Metallica tone" and "Neck is Straight" quotes. Things like that, to me, scream "I'm not a guitar player, I'm a salesman". Just my opinion. I am not a fan of people putting "Be a Master of Puppets with this Guitar like the stars of Orion". It is weak

- The Storage Unit. Hmm, how much more "Buffalo Bill" can you get. "Translation: Must meet at storage unit where I can hide the body after I rob you". Two side points. As someone already mentioned, that dude doesn't have room for one f'ing guitar in his house? Does he live in a closet? Wtf? Point two: this guy hasn't pulled the guitar out of storage to take pictures and clean the damn thing up? Is he just assuming it is even still there?

There is no way I'd ever meet someone in a remote location. I'd say meet me at this guitar store. If I try it out and love it, I'll even pay you an extra $100, etc., whatever you think. I don't know man, I don't like this situation. Guy might be a badass but you just don't know. People who know the worth of something, don't sound shady.

Looks like the unanimous verdict is to run a mile in the opposite direction, mate.

LOL!!

Yes, in the words of Metallica, 'Sad But True".

It sucks missing out on a good deal but if it is not real, then you don't miss out on anything. I'm not saying to completely pass on this but make sure that other guy is a bit more flexible.

I wouldn't bother if it was free. I don't waste my time with flakes.
