Ok, so here's the deal. I haven't been really satisified with my guitar tone since I sold my old 2-ch Dual Recto (sold it to finance my purchase of a MOD50 head). At first I really enjoyed the MOD50 with Erect and SL modules but I was missing something from the MOD50 - it didn't have that same massive rawness to it that I loved with the DR. So I got some more modules: COD, EG5 and SL2X but none of them did the trick, so I'm thinking it might be the overall design of the MOD50 that makes it sound to "polished", so to say, for my taste. Or is there some other module I might try - stock or modded. Other power amp tubes that will sound more raw? I have tried EL34's, 6L6's and 6V6 so far. When it comes to speakers I've been using 2x12's and 4x12's with V30's, G12T-75's, G12-65's and G12-80's.

Or am I better of selling my Egnater and go look for something else? My mind is totally blank right now, so any thoughts that might help me to go in any direction is greatly appriciated.

  :scared:

If a module can't get you where you want to be, I seriously doubt a tube change will. After the Erect, EG5 and MHG, it's all less gain from there. Sounds like you know what you want. Maybe you just need another amp. I go through this from time to time even though I really have come to dig the Egnater mods I have. I guess that's because I grew up a Marshall fan even though I never owned one. The Egnater, IMO, is a great way to get several different Marshall type tones. It does that in spades. But the Mesa lover in me doesn't get their fix. I constantly look at Mesa Marks and Studio Pres. I get by because I have an Axe FX and that thing can do anything. If it's a DR you crave, that's the only thing that'll scratch that itch. Anyway you could keep the Mod50 and just add another amp?

If the stock Egnater modules don't do what you are looking for, I've heard some of Pete's mods and they sound great. Check into his offerings at gigmods.com If not, maybe you need the "real" DR??

Have you tried the Randall Grail module? I found it definitely more "raw" than the Erect.

I've always been more of a MESA guy than a Marshall guy. I do really like the Marshall kind of sounds I can get from the MOD50 and especially with the SL2X module - but it's just not my sound. I've been through Cal50+, MkIV, Stiletto and Dual Recto and I've always been very pleased with the tones they were giving me. I even had a JMP-1 modded to sound like my old Dual Recto and that one nailed the tone and feel of that amp really well. It's not really a gain thing, I don't tend to use that much gain. I do like how the Erect sounds but it lacks the feel of the DR so to say...

I'll look into his work and see if that might be the answer to my problems...

Well it's not that easy to find modules in Sweden - the MTS-series haven't had that much success here, but I will see if I can locate one and try it!

I would have to agree that the grail is more raw and aggresivr than my erect

Don't forget salvation mods

He has a dead plate mod that is really nice

Plus he is in czec

I think a Grail or a DF modded ERect or a Pete Recto mod will get you closer but in my experience my MOD50s (yes I had two over time) always sounded more polite than my RM50s even with the same module and tubes.

What are the settings on your ERECT module?

Oh, I keep tweaking it all the time, but basically something like this:

Gain: 5-7
Bass: 5-6
Mid: 7-8
Treble: 5-6
Master: 5
Switches: off

Master:
Volume: 5
Density: 0
Presence: 3-4

EDIT: A thought just crossed my mind. I used to have Duncan pickups in most of my guitars, but for the last two months or so I've actually only been playing with DiMarzio equipped guitars...
Perhaps I'm on to something now... I meen a SD JB might be slightly more "rude" sounding compared to DiMarzio Breed and Megadrive which I'm currently using...

Could be. Ever try actives?

The Breed is a pretty smooth pickup.

Also, have you messed with the bright switches at all with any luck?

Yes, I've tried EMG's but I didn't like them that much. Can't put my finger on what I didn't like but it wasn't my cup of tea...

I have messed a bit with the bright switches but not with great results. I will test some more...

Maybe try running an EQ in front and boosting the mids???

I know I'm gonna get yelled at for this, but you guys who run your presence "3" and your Density at "0" are nuts.

The Presence and Density work WONDERS for adding balls and teeth man!!! Opens everything up, makes it more aggressive!!!

And those Dimarzios will definitely add a vowely "awww" sound that will add smoothness, that it sounds like you really don't want.

Also, I have to push the treble on my ERECT to about 2:30 - 3:00 before it starts to bite the way that I like it.

I am still a MTS noob and just tried my Grail last night for the first time and I ended up setting it up with the treble at 2:00, Density 9:00, and Pres at 2:00. Speakers are G12K100 and Elite 80's with an LP loaded with a JB.

Still tweaking but I agree. I like darker tones but I had to get the pres and treble up there to get some crunch.

I agree with the inherent "politeness" in most of the Eggie stuff, but thats what I like about them. To me its much easier to take a polite sound and make it rude with your playing style than to take a really rude sound and make it polite. I feel you can cover more ground that way, i've never liked the idea of a "rude" tone to be honest.

I would agree that the Egnater doesn't do Mesa. That was one reason I liked it- I had a Rectifier 50 combo for years that I liked, but I just got tired of that dark sound after a while. The Eggie was more Vox/Marshall.

I don't think I would reccomend getting rid of a Mod 50, but maybe it just doesn't do it if Mesa is what you are after.
