Got this pedal last week and it’s very impressive! I’ve owned over 100 boost type pedals over the years (including all the ones I’ve seen mentioned here) and the only 4 I’ve kept were my original silver Klon Centaur, Coppersound Broadway, Furman PQ3 and TC Electronic 1140, but this one is looking to be a 5th keeper and I think my 4th favorite of the 5, but they all have something different/special to offer amongst each other
It has all the warmth and growl I love with germanium pedals, but is also very tight/focused. Many germanium pedals, like my Coppersound Broadway, are really great for blues and classic rock, they sound very warm, organic and growly, but are too loose for metal, while this Fulltone is actually one of the tighter boosts I’ve owned
The Coppersound Broadway still sounds more organic/vintage and warm, but like I said not focused enough. The Ranger is way tighter and also has more growl to it. I’d say the Ranger is the germanium boost to have for hard rock and metal, while the Broadway is the germanium boost for classic rock and bluesy type stuff, so both worth having. I’d think most guys on here would love the Ranger!
The only thing I’d nitpick about this pedal is that it still, like 99.9% of all newer/nonvintage gear, sounds comparatively filtered/not as organic as the vintage stuff, while the Coppersound Broadway is a newer pedal that I think really has that unfiltered/organic sound. Compared to my klon, it has a warmth, growl and very pleasing voicing that the Klon doesn’t have, but the Klon sounds much more full frequency/unfiltered, organic, vocal and for leads it’s no contest, but no boost I’ve tried comes close to touching the Klon for leads. Compared to most recent made boosts it’ll come off organic and have better tone than most, but I’ve been spoiled ever since I got into doing comparisons with vintage stuff and once you hear it, you can’t I unhear it
I’ve gotten rid of a huge chunk of legendary boost pedals lately because I could dial in either my TC1140 or Furman PQ3 to sound much better, so some pedals that went were my Timmy V1, VFE Standout, Buxom Boost, Spaceman Mercury IV, 1981, and others. If there was a vintage rack pq unit that had germanium diodes in it, it could very well dethrone the Ranger or Broadway, but until I find out about something like that existing, the germanium pedals offer something beautiful that the pq3 and 1140 don’t have
