Griffin Analog's new "scythe" boost is everyone's chance to get a vfe focus clone that has a couple slight improvements.

a. The scythe has a slightly wider frequency spectrum than the focus when both pedals are set at absolute minimum filtering, in other words with the toggles set to shallow slopes, and the knobs set to 0-filtering/wide-open (which on the scythe is full counter/7:00 on the hpf/tight knob, and the exact opposite on the lpf/smooth knob). A listener would probably not hear the difference, but as the player you can feel just a smidget more fullness in the lows and extension in the highs,,,,,,but that is before applying any filtering so for most it's basically irrelevant.

b. On the scythe the mix control is a full-size knob instead of the tiny mini-knob on my focus. This is nice because it is a very useful control. I suggest always starting 100% wet (full clock-wise/5:00),,,,and then slowly rolling it back to add just a touch of dry signal. I had always been opposed to mix or blend controls on boost/od/distortions until I got my focus.

It's set for one of my 81/85 guitars I was using last night, so not much filtering is required, but I still like the slope set steep on the hpf/tight control, gives it a tighter quicker punch.

Oh and obviously a big thanks! to Wayne for this. I've been wanting another one of these forever so I can Velcro one on my board, but the focus rarely come up anymore and I'm sure they'd want $300 or more for one these days. IMO there's nothing better as a boost for actives and very-high-output passives like most of the "metal" pickups.

You're welcome !

It's a really useful tone sculptor ......

I am always shocked at how wide and open the frequency spectrum is with his stuff. Really versatile. The Scythe looks super nice. I agree, a lot of ODs seem to fall apart with higher output pickups. The Ice Scream pedal gave me a chuckle, I like designs like that.

Good stuff. I’m jealous 🤘🏻

Another thing this really excels at is boosting gain pedals of any kind, or solid-state amps.
I used to use a mxr 6-band with pushed mids for this, but these do it so much better, and with less noise overall per the amount of added gain.
