Managed to snag this amp for free on eBay using my eBay Bucks voucher from the last build up period. $310 shipped, original Sylvania 6L6GC's in it. Was looking pretty good for me, until I got the box. When I moved it, I knew immediately there were going to be problems. The amp flopped around freely inside the box. As I was opening it up, I heard broken glass moving around inside the amp. Bye-bye, sylvanias.

Pulled it out of the box and low and behold, somewhere in it's life, the transformer had been mounted down with 2 pieces of extremely thin metal, and was now flopping about freely inside the headshell and took out the left most power tube. The chassis was also loose inside the amp, but all the screws were in it, so obviously some of the chassis mounting screws busted in shipping as well.

I already went to the seller, who offered to refund me whatever the repair costs will be. Could be an OT plus power tubes, but we will see. I feel bad for the guy, as he's never shipped an amp before, but common sense would tell you to make sure whatever you're shipping is secure inside the box. My tech does great work at great prices, so I'm guessing the damage wont be too bad for labor, and I'm going to have him check the electrolytic caps, change the filter caps, SGR's and mod for more gain while he's in there (I'll cover that charge obviously) and have a beast Butcher when it's all said and done. I also got the matching cab off of GC for $140 which arrived on my porch an hour ago, so there's that.

Anyways, here's the damage.

Sorry to hear about this and hope you get it sorted out! My first tube Peavey was a Butcher that I bought new back in 1986.

A few weeks ago there was a Butcher on ebay that had pics of it powered up with no cab. I checked the sellers feedback and didn't see that he had sold any amps prior. Probably the same seller?

I think someone who is stupid enough to pack an amp that way is probably also stupid enough to turn on a tube amp without a speaker load.

Sorry to hear this my friend but luckily the seller was smart enough to offer to pay for the repairs. Hope it is a simple fix in addition to the SGRs sounds like :aww:

Congrats none the less - I'm sure it will be a kick ass amp once done and a helluva add to your Peavey collection.

Ugh, at least it was cheap.

Eeek, that's brutal.

It will be a beast when you get it back though. The Butcher was my 2nd amp ever, first tube amp, and the only amp I've ever bought twice. At some point I'd like to mod mine too. Maybe a little more gain, and tame the brightness a little. A loop would also be nice.

This is why I backed out of selling my amp a few years ago, right here. I didn't want to be responsible for packing and shipping the thing. I know what it would take to properly ship it and just wasn't feeling the risk.
Now its sitting waiting for me to decide what its fate will be. It's a monster amp, I have it paired with a Sheffield 412 at the moment. I am curious to see other modified Butchers though.
