jump to 2:00 in and you can't help but feel sorry for the guy trying to keep up with a young hungry on fire john james sykes in tygers of pan tang

i loved this album so much!! long live john sykes!

One of my favorite albums from my youth! I'll say it......Sykes is God!

Rob Weir definitely knows how it feels to "want"!

I love that album too. I really dug that singer too.

Rob Weir has always been shite and still is ;) :aww: :aww:

Check out the Crazy Nights album too, some great duelling on there as well

it always painted the mental picture of a guy trying to make his way uphill on a mountain road in a wheezing pinto
as an F15 buzzes him strafing all living things

:hys: :hys: :hys: Nicely put. Sykes DID destroy that poor bastard.

i've always wondered about this kind of thing
if you had any clue about the big picture, why in the world would you want to even try to play a trade off solo with john sykes if you were as bad as that guy??
take a clue from rudolph schenker with matthias jabs or uli roth

kk downing and glenn tipton...ok glenn smoked kk but at least kk had something to say plus he had the metal look soloing with his V held high so he gets a pass

def lep had the steve clark and pete willis early on and phil collen and viv later...solid.

adrian smith and dave murray were both tasty and pretty well balanced and that one was a classic pairing because the tones were different yet complimentary

queensryche chris degarmo and michael wilton weren't shreddy, but cool in a harmonic way

thin lizzy always had some great players and rocked the twin guitar thing

racer x was ridiculous...MONSTERS and the most intense shredding duo ever

whitesnake...was best when it was just sykes...worst when it was just vai..and ok with vandenberg and campbell

jj french and eddie ojeda...ah....

yah.

Ratt - Crosby/Demartini?
Whoever was in Lizzy Borden - they were all decent, particularly on "Visual Lies", which was Joe Holmes & Gene Allen
Rough Cutt - Derakh & Hager
King Kobra - Sweda & Philips
Don Dokken's solo band - Billy White & John Norum
Heaven's Edge - Steve Parry & Reggie Wu

Serious rig talk infraction.

that dokken duo was also killed! Some of norums best!

There are a few good ones on Don's album, but Norum has lots of better stuff than what's on there on his solo albums. IMO Up From the Ashes is stuck in 1st gear.

I haven't listened to those Tygers albums in a long while, I will be getting them out.

Sounds like dude n#1 just learned a pentatonic scale 2 weeks before that solo .. boooooring zzzzzzzzzzz Sykes killed that cat.

Norum is a god in my books!

i like how first guy rob weir hit the flanger to add some pizazz on his second crack as he tries in vain to bend to pitch, and sykes responds by taking his head off with a machette and marching around his kingdom with it on a long spear.

it's kind of like the solo in "round and round" in reverse...crosby has to add a harmony to his section to make it even remotely useable on the heels of dimartini dropping a bazooka on his ego.

Cool to see a bunch of folks who understand that guitar playing is a competition :2thumbsup:

Great post!

Now I know what I would sound like having it off with Sykes.

on one hand it is. at the highest levels of musicianship there are first chair vs second chair instrumentalists, at the club level you had bands like van halen and quiet riot jockeying for the same gigs,

but on the other hand if you are going to take a lead in a 2 gtr band and one guy is a world class hero and you're the other guy and obviously WAY less skilled, perhaps you might want to be honest with yourself and:

a) acknowledge your limitations

b) ask the other guy for some suggestions, what his take on it is, and if you do solo, be real about the results

c) and if it's that lopsided maybe pass when asked to solo aka rudolph schenker. stick to rhythm and be honest with yourself.

it happens to me weekly. we have 2 sax players that are world class touring guys and if there is a complicated solo section i will ALWAYS default to them unless they are unavailable that day or whatever and i am the main soloist in the group, or unless the song is rockier and calls for a guitar solo to fit better.

Valid points  Good job taking my "smart-ass" post to a logical explanation
