so i have an offer to buy an OCD that someone claims is a v3 even though the serial number is 16159; which puts it in the v4 range. HOWEVER, the pictures he's showing me of the inside clearly resemble the board build of a v3. is there any way to determine if, how, and why this could truly be a v3 in a v4 casing?

here's what he's showing me:

and now here's a genuine v3 board and build for comparison:

and now here's a v4 board and build:

so do you guys think it's really a v3 and/or will sound like a genuinev3?

Well I would first ask for a pic of what is written on the inside casing of the pedal (first picture). The others all say the version number, but the first picture has the writing blocked by the 9v battery plug. Only thing you can 100% see from that pic is "rico"

Then just send the pic to fulltone to comfirm.

I have original Version #467 took forever to get back in the day, and it is still my favorite pedal to this day

You could always email Fulltone. It is possible they had extra circuit boards of version 3 upgraded to version 4.

So now you got me wondering, what is better or different about version 3 as compared to 4?

Jimmy - he's not lying.

Despite the fact that Fulltone will swear up and down by the serial numbers, there are transition units like the one you mentioned. I've had one. They sound like V3s.

V3s have more bass, more treble, and the volume comes on quicker. They get kinda boomy in the latter half of the gain range.

I think the V4 is way easier to dial in.

Some OCDs with a serial number below #16061 have been marked v4 on the interior, nevertheless they still have the v3 circuit board and do not have all the modifications of the v4. A rumor has been going around that the labeling of these v3:s as v4:s was a joke from the assemblers - weather or not they truly differ from the v3:s is not known to the author.

Quite a good site on OCDs with sound samples

I had (now sold) a V3 which had Rev 1.4 written inside. I firmly believe there was a transition model from V3 to V4.

yes, but the serial number on the one in question is ABOVE #16061, which makes its v4 status more probable than v3 (and yes, pedalarea is an excellent site!). but the pix and info have been forwarded to fulltone and we'll have an answer shortly!

I wonder how many e-mails a day Fulltone gets asking about versions of the OCD. I wonder if they regret not just releasing each version with a new model name....

my friend bud had the very first v4 revision from a v3, and his son worked for fulltone so he signed it "for dad"

great sounding pedal

Not sure if this will help but. . . My v4 had a red LED. But I see now that the latest v4 has a blue LED.

I had one from Jan '08 and was told on a different forum when I posted gut shots it was a v3 tranistional (it had blue light). I forget the serial #. I listed it on ebay, with full gut shots, and sold if for $193.

When all else fails, the pics of the boards don't lie.
