Im looking for some more Distortions/Overdrives not really for boosting but to layer over a lead channel on high gain amps.

Im looking to have a sort of double amp sound, wall of sound thing going on or maybe to sometimes just change the gain structure for a different taste.

I have a EWS Brute Drive that does this beautifully, sort of like slathering chocolate on a cake. The way I use it, it doesnt feel like its boosting it but sort of filling in cracks in the sound.

My BB preamp doesnt seem to do this well though so I use it just as a slight boost and mostly on clean channels.

Im guessing fuzzes would work well too? Since I dont want a boosted sound I figure I should stick to looking at distortions instead of Overdrives?

I have the Rocket Fuel and its awesome... But its kinda expensive.

I also still have the Carl Martin Hot drive n boost (or w/e, i think thats the name lol) and its nice, but really, really transparent.

My favorite: Ibanez TS9.

Just try the Maxon OD808 or the Fulltone OCD.Another possibllity could be some MXR OD or Boss.
I just got the MXR Zakk Wylde Berzerker Overdrive and i am really happy with it.

Rocket fuel? are they readily available yet?

I messed around with a TS9 and a BB preamp but thats not really what im looking for....a buddy is bringing over his OCD so im giving that a try.

Just to clarify, not looking to boost the signal....just want something that will sound good on its own to layer on top of my lead channel

If you're looking for natural amp-like tone and not just clean boost territory, check out the Wampler stuff. Very realistic sounding and doesn't have that "cardboard" thing going on like most pedals. OCD is cool too as far as feeling like a real amp, but I couldn't gel with the voicing. There are no mids and it's a little crusty sounding. To get any sort of cutting mids, I had to crank the presence and then it just gets nasty.

Oh yeah, the Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret is badass.

Rocket Fuel blends in nicely with the amps od. No matter how you slice it though you are boosting the input if you run the OD into your lead channel. I've been through so many OD's. I'm happy with the RF. I actually came back to it. Some of the others above were more on the modern tonal spectrum. I do not prefer a clean boost into a gain channel. OD all the way for me.

You're right about fuzz sounding nice for leads, i used to use a Keeley Fuzzhead for that. Would kick it on for leads. Suppose some fuzzes could be too extreme, the Keeley isn't a super crazy fuzz.

For me it's XTS Tejas Boost, Hermida Zendrive, and Analogman modded Maxon SD-9 on my board.

I like the MXR GT-OD better than the TS808 RI, OCD, and Wylde OD I had. I use it for a myriad of tones--versatile pedal. Won't break the bank either.
