Odd issue with a Palmer PGA-04

I ordered a replacement Palmer PGA-04 for the one that I sold a short while ago because I realized that I am a fool and it was a mistake to sell it. (This is just a disclaimer, not the reason for my posting.)

On the Palmer website (http://www.palmergear.com/pga04.shtml), the specs for the 04 are listed as: 8 Ohms, 120W RMS.

So the unit arrives in the mail yesterday and on the back of it is a sticker labeled: 16 Ohms, 100W RMS. I email the manufacturer and ask why there is a discrepancy. I immediately receive an auto-response that they are out of the office for a while due to a family health issue. That's unfortunate. As family is a higher priority, I assume I'm on my own for a bit.

So I sit down and start flipping through the manual that came with the unit. It too says 8 Ohms. Then I notice that the sticker on the back saying 16 Ohms is actually covering up another label that says 8 Ohms.

I'm now thoroughly confused. Why would they do this? I've found a few sites listing the PGA-04 as 16 Ohms but the majority list it as 8 Ohms and so I'm tempted to think the others may be incorrectly listed. Or perhaps they make 2 models and I just ended up with the rare one?

My amp has both 8 and 16 Ohm mono outputs, but I don't want to risk a mismatch.

Set your amp to 8 ohm and you're gonna be just fine. Call the palmer guys when they're avaible to see if it can be modified to 8 ohm or at least how you can you verify its true impedence load. but as long as you set your amp with an impedence that's <16 you're ok

@B. Ste: Thanks for the suggestion! I had read similar things on other forums about impedance mismatches I was just reluctant to try it with an amp that I couldn't easily replace. :)

I don't have experience with Palmers but have you tried reading the ohms with a multimeter? When ever I'm not sure I just plug a cord into the amp or cab and hook up the old multimeter. Like I said I have no personal experience with palmers at all. So excuse my comment if it's a stupid one.

I don't think it's a stupid question, but I do not have a multimeter

The standard unit usually comes as 8 ohms. The have a 16 ohms option but you usually have to request it. I would assume they sent you a 16 by mistake.

Ahh, so that confirms some of the listings I found. I just wasn't sure about it.

Thanks for clearing that up rrobertson!

Hi guys,

we just wanted to clear something out. The website http://www.palmergear.com/pga04.shtml is not an official Palmer Germany website. This website was created by Jams Audio, our former distributor in the US. They are now a normal dealer and are not the manufacturer of the Palmer products.

Palmer products are made at our headquarters in Germany. Here's the only official Palmer website:
http://www.palmer-germany.com/mi/en.htm

If you have any question regarding our products please feel free to contact us at anytime. You will not receive emails telling you that we are out of the office for a while due to a family health issue :)

Thanks for the note guys. I will reach out to you directly in the future.
