Sadly, I feel a large part of this collection might be bought by people who will hide it away never to be seen again :(

Just goes to show you how backwards people have their priorities these days. 14.5 million for a strat?

I didn't know Derek had that kind of coin.
me neither — but he didn’t seem to be the guy jumping around after the sale…

in any case this auction seems to have permanently settled the guitar = historic art value argument. i will therefore amend my recent $10M estimate for the VH frankenstrat should it ever be auctioned to $25-30M. that is truly a cultural icon with high artistic value.

The original Frankenstein is a tough one. It had so many changes over the years. Really, the only truly original parts are the body paint, black and white originally, red added later. Neck was changed many, many times, ditto for bridge - Fender, FR w/o fine tuners, then OFR and who knows what's on there now? Pickups? Started out with one from an ES-335 and on and on. Honestly, I'd rather have his old 12000 series Marshall. I heard that one was sold privately for $250k'ish while he was still alive.

i recently played a pretty well crafted custom Frankie in the sense that all the details were pretty authentic looking. reflectors, quarter, cig burns…it made me appreciate the mad scientist Eddie was. had the neck been a bit wider and felt more old school charvel/ broken in, and the pickup more PAF sounding, i may have considered it.
