This video is particularly funny to me because I know these guys really well - 2 of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Adam is an awesome drummer and was in my band for a couple of years. Here's the video, I'm not sure what they (well, Jake in particular) were thinking when they did this!

It was probably a Ganglion syst. I had one in my wrist on the palm side, I went to the doctor to have it checked out. He told me the use to call them Bible systs because people would do exaclty what your friends did in the video except they would use a bible. My doctor didn't recommend rupturing the syst, but said that rupturing was effective in getting rid of it. The other options were cortazone shots or surgical removal. I opted for rupturing it, but I used a 18" long 2" diameter hollow pipe, it really hurt but it hasn't come back in close to 10 years.

What kills me is it looks like the book missed where he said the cyst was?

I just talked to Adam, he said the syst is gone today!

I had a ganglion cyst removed from my left wrist in '85. It had gotten so large that I could no longer play guitar standing because I couldn't bend my wrist enough. I had it sugically removed and was back onstage in a month. However... over the last couple of years I've had alot more trouble playing. I've been told it is probably from scar tiisue that has built up from having the cyst removed. Sucks... I used to be able to play faster with less effort and pain... Whaddaya ya gonna do though... at least I can still play...

I would NEVER have tried smashing it with a book, although I was told that sometimes if you rupture them they don't com back... however the other damage you do could be worse... no thx...

Oh man, that does suck. Maybe a surgery to remove scar tissue? but yeah, I would never do what they did!

I might consider removing the scar tissue if my skills deteriorate to the point that I no longer enjoy playing...

Man... I had one FOREVER till I got it surgically removed at some point cause it was enormous.

I had it since I was a kid. I never played the guitar in the right position. Cyst would come and go. I didn't hit it with a encyclopedia (lol) but I've heard people pop it like that before. That's right it pops. Mine popped 2-3 times. Once when I was a kid I fell on my hand and it went away for a few months. Anopther time I was playing Bball and the ball hit my wrist and popped it. 3rd was when I was joking around with a friend. We were pushing each other around I pushed him on the ground and he grabbed me so we fell together. Next thing you know, cyst gone.

But yeah this last one was ENORMOUS. I actually had a full on surgery to get it removed. Naturally it never came back.

I know how bad that must have hurt though. One day I was determined to pop it so I kept putting pressure on it. It hurts like hell.

EDIT : Sah5150, I know what you mean. My scar tissue is restricting my wrist too. It never hurts though. It just feels like it'll never bend as much as my good wrist anymore. Which it doesn't.

the devil bump--room mate in college gave it the old smasharoo and not only did it not go away, he gave himself a hairline fracture in his hand. AWESOME!

i didn't dare look at the disgusting related videos in the side column.....Oooooof! :bleh:

Add me to the list. I've had them in both wrists (on the back side, not the palm side) since I was maybe 16. They most definitely affected my playing and I guess still do. They must rupture or at least leak somewhat now and then because they sort of come and go. Sometimes it looks/feels like there's grape under the skin, sometimes you can't see them at all. And yeah, they hurt like a bitch when you apply pressure the wrong way. I can remember in gym class in high school having to do pushups on my knuckles or fingertips, because putting palms against the floor was either impossible or hurt like a motherfucker. Probably should get them surgically removed, but I never bothered. Like Steve with the scar tissue, it seems like you might be trading one problem for another...

It makes for a funny vid though.

In my opinion, do it man.. I think it's worth it. I was really happy to see it gone after surgery. But beware that you might now be able to play for 3-4 weeks.

I had (and still have to some degree) one in EACH wrist-back of the hand side where the wrist bends.
Got them both surgically drained and man, did it hurt. It got to the point where I couldn't even pull off a power chord.
