On a speaker binge

I've experimented with a few different speaker types in the past but never really went all out. In the past i have had gt75, v30, wizard, swamp thing, Texas heat, veteran 30, and tone tubby ceramic.

Now that i have finally found my guitars, pickups, and amps i figured it is time to obsess over the final filter.

I have recently purchased a few speakers for further testing.

On the way are:

K100
Scholz sugar cone
Jensen electric lightning

I'd like to try:

Austin speaker works
Scum back
Jensen tornado
Ev 12 l

Anyone else swapping speakers obsessively right now?

Any advice, comments, Reviews etc?

I'd like to try a Scumback H75 in place of one of the V30's in my recto 212. Would smooth out the mid spike and tighten it up according to Jim.

gotta make sure the carpet matches the drapes!

i'm allways messing with speakers, had my junk pretty solid for awhile, but got gas and new deferent amps. so i'm fixing to try some stuff, or more of what i know works.

what amps and cabs are you trying to shore up?

id definately throw a scumback H-30 inspired speaker in there somewhere to try out. another one worth mentioning is the celestion CL-80. not a big fan of the K100's....would rather try out a p50e or a splawn small block.

i have played a 2x12 loaded with small block's and they rip all kinds of serious ass. the new EVH speakers in the EVH 5150 III cabinets are based off of a G12M, and splawn's small blocks are also based off of the G12M cone and magnet design, but with a much higher headroom than the EVH's. having played them i can detest they make the sheffield 1200's i play through right now sound like muffled/distorted/low dB sensitivity/low grade piles of junk. definately consider ordering one from scott - they deliver the goods and do it well - the natural roll off on the highs is at exactly the right place like a G12-65, only with more attitude and definition and much clearer/no wierd EQ in the speakers like G12-65's and the headroom means you can move some serious air without breakup. another added benefit is the low end is rock solid - much better than the EVH cabinet speakers IMHO - i have played both and the splawns are more rock solid all around - much more suited to heavier players, where i would say the EVH brand/type is more suited to soft classic rock players.

Texas heat was punchy and a little grainy, seemed very much a dime bag sound which is not my goal.

The swamp thing had huge bottom end and seemed unbreakable. I didn't like the mids the swamp thing produced though. Seemed awesome for a clean amp like a fender.

I'm looking for mates for my Einstein, dragon and black more amps.

Cool I'll check out the big blocks to, they sound up my alley.

Try the EVM 12L's with the Diezel. These speakers are very loud, punchy and bright.

Will do.

i love the Herbert and VH4 with Swamp Thangs and Governors mixed.

guess your mixing the K's with something for the Einey and/or Dragon?

Scumbacks, Webers or good old school greenbacks should be nice with the Blackmore, depending on how much you use.

I've got a Scumback J75 coming in soon. I sold my H75, way too bright for me.

my favorite speakers for loud tight rock / metal is the k100

although for recording the v30 is king.

my favorite speaker for classic rock stuff is the celestion 65.

How much I use? Me cornfused?

Yeah was gonna start by mixing the k100 with the veteran 30 for Einstein. After that I am going to try k100 electric lightning both at 99 db.

I am attempting to find speaker mates for the three amps im def keeping and their respective cabinets.

I'll try greenback types with the engl, scum backs hopefully.

I ordered a forte 3d 2x12 for Einstein that illl be trying the speakers in one it arrives, until then the port city and the usa diezel 2x12 are ginieau pigs.

Get the H 55hz magnet. Much better bass than the 75hz. The M 55hz might be worth a go for a mix. The 75 hz Scums lacked bass to my ears. That Scholtz Sugarcone will mix with the K-100. I have a feeling you will like.

sorry the correct answer is GAIN! how much gain you use! :scared:

and i agree with Danny on the H75, it's too bright. don't know why guys are mixing them with M's. the H55 is allright though.

I use the least amount of gain I can and still thrash 16ths.

Typically far less than most modern metal players.

The h75 is off of the list then, i hate too bright. I favor darker sounds. It seems that the h55 may be a better fit, I'll also go for ldhc i think. Decisions, decisions.

Eminence Lynch Super V. Not sure why nobody else is trying these out seeing as they will be discontinued soon. I have them paired up with RI greenies and I'm diggin the sound for the first time in ages.

Cool i wasn't sure if the sugar cone was in the 99db range, cant find any specs on it other than it has a 62 ounce magnet made of ceramic, neodymium, and alnico.

I found that 99db is a good sensitivity for speaker mixing, there are quite a few out there.

Te only reason this wasn't on the list was the fact that its discontinued. Could probably still find them easily though. Ill look for one.

Weird... I don't find the 65 watt H75 dark at all.
I don't find any pre rola type speaker bright.
Maybe playing at home sitting in front of the amp..
