one and only high gain amp- what should it be?

i've always loved high gain amps, but only ever owned one (mk iv) for a brief stint in high school. i never really bothered with them because the type of music i do simply doesn't call for that sound/those levels of gain- and for the times i did want those gain levels just to mess around with, i was able to get pretty damn close with pedals. example: https://soundcloud.com/user-378614181/klon-ocd sure, it could do with some tweaking, but it's a solid sound, imo. of course the wise thing to do financially is to stick to the pedals for the rare times where i want that sound, but i've got some disposable income now that i'm older and would like to have one amp for the dedicated high gain thing. i recently played a friends 2011 slo and was blown away by that thing, and am thinking one of those might very well be the answer. but i wanted to see what else you guys might recommend. i don't quite need diezel levels of gain, or even that modern a sound really. evh's tone will always be the pinnacle for me... i know that's a cliche, but i really have never found a better gained up tone that i liked more than his. and i dig ac/dc as well, though i know those gain levels are pretty low relative to more modern stuff. i have played a caa od-100 i really dug a couple years ago as well, plus it had a very nice and useable gain channel. i know caa was partly suhr, but i haven't played any suhr amps that blew me away unfortunately, and i have played most. oh, i did own a jp2c+ for literally just two days- bought it on the spot at the store after hearing it through a mesa 412, but couldn't make it work with any of my cabs at home and didn't have space for another or desire to buy another cab. i realize this might be an issue since i only have three cabs, two of which won't work for this as they're both g12h30/blue 212's, and the other is a matchless 410, which i'm not sure would be ideal for any of these amps. so maybe i'd be willing to add a 212 at most- def not a 412... maybe a bogner os 212 would be good. but back to amps... what are you guys thinking? first time i played a be-100 i was totally blown away... ditto the dirty shirley, pink taco, small box, etc. but as crazy as it sounds, the friedman amps come off as almost too perfect/polished to me if that makes sense- like a mastered record. i know that's probably a desirable trait to most, but i don't want that. maybe a friedman modded marshall of some kind? cameron? or should i just go all-in and do the slo?! eager to hear what all else is out there. a nice clean channel is def a plus, but i will settle for "usable". my main amps are all chimey el84 amps... audio kitchen big chopper, matchless hc30, bruno ug30... thanks in advance!

I think you’d be good with a Marshall JMP and some pedals out front. It’s a magic combination, doesn’t cost a lot and holds its resale value.

Helios will fit the bill. One of the best modded Marshalls. It is more raw than Friedmans, very tight even without boost but still amazing feeling under fingers.
XTC have different gain structure and it is not suited for higher gain. Its missing upper mids grind.

JMP with an SD-1 is where I settled. If no pedal, I liked the Rev C Recto a lot. C+ was ok as well; I liked the C+ a lot more than the SLO. The SLO crunch was cool but was not nearly as great as the JMP. The SLO lead was great but kinda slow and "brown" IMHO. The C+ or a boosted JMP is just angrier and faster.

Bogner 20th Shiva is killer and has an extremely nice clean channel to boot

I have a Bog Shiva for sale in case your interested, killer amp, my two favs are a wizard MTL and the Fridamn Be100 Deluxe

+1

Modded JMP with a pedal out front. I’m honestly not sure my 5150 will be around once I finish my Marshall.

So I would say either a Bogner Helios or Ecstacy.
I have both and they both are really great !
The Ecstacy is like the Swiss army knife of amps !
The Helios has less gain the the Ecstacy but is more gritty or raw sounding the sustain on the Helios is incredible!
I have not tried the Helios Eclipse yet ?
The only draw back for me on the Helios is the clean on the high output does not get super clean.
The clean on the low output plexi side is awesome.

thanks everyone for the suggestions thus far; much appreciated!
i have seen a few people mention the helios now. unfortunately, i am not a fan of the amp.
a good friend owns it (same guy who has the slo) and i've had the chance to play it a few times now, and just can't warm up to it. i find it a very harsh/unpleasant amp, no matter how i dial it in.
i do enjoy a fast attack that grips well under the fingers, which someone said the helios has, and i agree, but it's the sound i can't get into.
what are some other fast attack grippy options?
p.s. mkiic+(+) has always been a dream, saw someone mention it, maybe will look into that!

Helios and harsh ? With its tone controls there is no problem to tame it even with V30s. Maybe something wrong with it or bad cab. Imho cab is essential part of sound.
MKIIC++ is much harsher and agressive amp. Personally never really understand hype about it and prices are absolutelly insane. MKIII plays almoat the same for fragment of price.

If you play a Mk III and then a C+, it’s like taking a blanket off your cab clarity difference. That’s been my experience.

But they are crazy expensive, and might not be your thing. I love a boosted SLO, but those prices are C+ range at the moment.
I’m gonna suggest, if you like the SLO tone, a 2 channel Triple Rectifier or newer Multi Watt. The 3 channel from 2000-2010 is a bit harsh. You can get them dark and heavy, or bump up the mids and get surprisingly close to the SLO tone. They are very affordable compared to most amps that have been mentioned. Around 1200 used.
Or, if you want more of a Marshall experience you could try a Wizard Modern Classic I or II. Biggest sounding amp there is, amazing clarity too.

Of course, like Dave said a JMP 2203/4 and a pedal is great. Can’t go wrong there.

I agree. I've come to learn this within the past couple years myself. JMP or JCM800 can't go wrong with either.

If you want higher gain out of the box than a 2203/2204, the few that come to mind based on what you described are...

VHT/Fryette Deliverance. Clean to mean with your guitar volume knob, and it really does have a hot-rodded Marshall character (to me) while still staying tight and focused.
Marshall JCM800 2205 or 2210 (make sure it's late '80's, though... the early ones kind of suck)
Marshall JCM900 Hi Gain Master Volume
Mesa Boogie Trem-O-Verb or Stiletto

5150 or Mark III for high gain. Not an 800, they need a boost.

A lunch box amp will be O.K. but ear fatigue will be a factor. I'm sure there's others, but these two win for high gain. The 5150 is noisier but easier to dial in. The Boogie is something special. It is better than 90% of all the amps out there when played side by side, so many guys that I have played with ditched their Marshall amps after being upstaged by the mighty Mark III. Marshall killer by design.

It's a third of the price but swings with the big boys. Rivera K-Tre. Sweet cleans, nasty gain, doesn't need a boost, one and done.

Based on your comments about wanting something a bit more ‘raw’ than Friedmans, I would stay away from Bogners and Soldano (though I have owned and loved both at various times)...

I also think a jcm with pedals...or a Wizard could do the trick
