Opinion about the custom audio od100se+

I almost bought this head twice but I backed out. Looking at another one but I see a lot of guys get them and unload them quick?? Reason why? Thanks

Ive tried it and I hated and I mean hated the gain channel. There is just something about the lower mids in the amp that I don't dig. Well to be honest I prefer a different midrange alltogether in my amps and the CAE's have a lower mid that I don't like, but that's just me and it took me a while to put my finger on it. The clean channel was one of the best that Ive ever heard on a high gainer period.
Then there is the fact that there are many models and tweaks and you can also throw in the fact that they have 5881 versions and el34 versions with different o/p transformers!! (that might be why I didnt like the ones ive played)

I hate to say this but its one of those things that you really need to hear/play one for yourself to find out if you like it.

Yoeri had the same opinion I had but he has since played another one that he really dug so maybe something has changed on the amp. You would be doing yourself a favor if you could try one for yourself if at all possible

I feel the same as Ralph. Love the clean, didn't like the gain channels. I haven't played it but judging from videos and clips that little Badger amp sounds pretty good. Seems like a good platform for pedals.
 
Personal preference. Didn't do anything for me. They have an odd dark voicing (at least the one I played did) that sounds very distant to me. The cleans were solid, but I prefer the cleans on the Herbert.

I've heard them sound good in someone else's hands, just not for me.
 
Were all you guys playing the se+ model with el34's? They say there is a big difference? I would love to try one out first but where I am in Pa there aren't any dealers. I think thats why I passed on 2 already from replys like this. Thanks for the info.
 
I owned the SE+ with el34s and plexi trannies for exactly 1 week. My XTC smoked it. Save youself the trouble and buy a Bogner instead.
 
I think I'm steering clear of the od100se+ for now. Next on the hit list Diezel herbert or soldano slo 100. I owned a einstein and it rocked but a touch to modern sounding for me. I seem to favor the high gain marshall tone. I know the slo is hot rod marshall but I hear you really need to crank it to sound good. I only heard clips of the herbert and I'm not sure if there is any marshall tone in it. I just sold an evh 3 and I think I am getting sellers remorse. This is like a bad crack habit. :lol: :LOL: Any info welcome. Thanks guys.
 
Soldano and the Diezel are apples and oranges. If the Einstein was too modern sounding for you, the Herbert won't blow your skirt. Have you tried a Quickrod? If so, and you didn't like it, get an Ecstasy.
 
I had an OD100 SE+ with the plexi transformer and EL34s. It was a nice amp, but I also had (and still do) an XTC and and the SLO. While I appreciate an awesome clean tone, I am more about a "usable" clean and an AWESOME overdrive tone, and the CAA, IMO, didn't do anything that Bogner or Soldano couldn't do better. If the OD100 were my only amp, it might be different, but it didn't make me want to lose either the Bogner or Soldano. This is the exact same way I felt when I had an Elmwood Modena 90...great amp, but I'm totally covered with the XTC and SLO.
 
Umm......The older versions I didn't really dig too much. The latest versions kick ass and like to be played loud. The one I got from Rareguitar really had me considering selling my CCV-100 and keeping it but I'm just gonna hang onto it for now. The OD100's are not a bedroom amp one bit but like everything..YMMV.. :rock:

That's the one I was referring to when I said I've heard them sound good in other people's hands :thumbsup:
 
i am so close to buying a od100 standard+. i wanted something with a great clean and a super clear (think splawn) gain channel. the splawn has a rather average clean so that puts it out of the running. i played a bogner XTC which was freaking phenomenal but wasnt that clear on the gain channel and also i wasnt too pleased with the clean. the XTC is a great amp though. i also tried a diezel vh4 and a vht sig at the time but each amp had its drawbacks. the od100 standard+ seems to be the perfect meeting point between a great clean and a clear high gain channel..but..and i know this sounds foolish..i havent played one yet :p here in nz the only way to play one is to buy one, but i can seem to find another amp that has a great clean and great distortion channel.
 
whoops..totally forgot to talk about the se+. it sounds nice on youtube so that says alot :p but it also sounds really compressed and a touch scooped in the mids to cut through live..but im sure with a few tweaks of the mid knob itd be better..but yeah..the gain channel just sounded really compressed..it was pretty clear though.

The Herbert is more modern sounding compared to the Einstein - so that probably wouldn't be your thing either.

I personally like the VH4 the most out of the Diezel's i have tried. The Herbert and Einstein didnt do much for me!
 
Isn't Reb Beach playing those amps? I might be mistaken but I thought I saw with one at a Whitesnke concert.

you are correct sir!!!..He played one awhile back and instantly retired his marshalls
 
Is it the SE+ Reb's using?

I never liked any of the OD-100s but i heard him play at a clinic before using one and it sounded very cool for his kinda tone. Musta been the SE+ like everyones saying..
 
Once again, Personal Preference and what it will do for you.
I have the SE+ with Plexi Tranni and JJ EL-34's and I LOVE IT!!!
I have owned the Diezel VH4 and Herbert, loved the Herbert and
was luke warm about the VH4. CAA and Diezel (Apples and oranges when compared
together) The CAA has a very open Marshall-esque thing goin' while the Herbert
is the Recto. KILLER, very Compressed with a Heavy Saturation, that can be
tamed when dialed correctly, but will never sound like a Modded Marshall.
The SE+ has more gain than you will ever need, and the EL-34's give it a great
midrange that's cuts through any mix.
It is similar in voicing to a Bogner XTC 101B (Which I also love)
just a matter of personal taste. The XTC has a More compressed, Smooth
lead tone while the SE+ is More Open and Grindy with a Bite to it.
I love the Herbert, XTC and SE+ but the CAA is suiting my needs
at this moment in time. These are just my opinions, but I hope I
clarified a couple of things for ya. I'd go for one if I was you
just make sure it has a Plexi Tranni, EL-34's, and Whomp switch
on the back, I don't think you'll be disappointed. :rock:
