I'm hoping to get some opinions on what pup everyone considers to be thee best passive bridge pickup for metal. Specifically, for use in a 25.5 scale, neck through - Alder/maple/ebony - w/floyd rose and tuned to drop D♭.

I anticipate using it for high gain rhythms approximately 95% of the time so while a great lead or clean sound would certainly be welcome, its not the focus of the search. I'm not looking for any group consensus just some interesting places to start and the more opinions the better, all makers welcome. Some of the recorded guitar tones I like: Decapitated, Gojira, the Haunted, Chimaira, KSE, Unearth.

Thanks in advance.

I really like the SD pearly gates but that being said I am not a fan of high output pickups.

I've never has this combo of woods before but it seems like it would be really bright?

If so the only thing I can really help with is if your guitar is too bright a Tone Zone does wonders.

I would have to say Dimarzio X2N. That thing just screams.
Just put it in 3 of my guitars.
Super tight and defined for chugging. Love it. :D

DUNCAN DISTORTION ftw!
evil and sinister midrange grind and molten harmonics
Handles drop tunings great

I have a Duncan custom 5 in a guitar with alder body, maple neck through and ebony fretboard and it rocks very hard, it sounds great for heavy stuff, it is tight and articulate, especially for the chuggah chggah stuff.

here is a clip I just found on youtube, you can get an idea, but it can get meaner and heavier than that and it always stays nice and tight.

I'm liking the DiMarzio dominion pickups. I put SD Black Winters in one of my guitars and don't like them as much. They seem to have some mud in the mix. The Dominions work great for drop tunings also.

That your band man? If so, love the fucking tune and the tone

I love the Bareknuckle Painkiller in my 7 string.
Killer. Like nothing I've ever heard. Very machine like and crushing. Very fast.

I love the BKP Painkiller, SD Black Winter, and DiMarzio Dominion, I have them in mahogany guitars. However in a bright guitar (presumably based on the alder/maple/ebony combo), my favorite is the SD Nazgul. I have the Nazgul in my Jackson SL2H and I tried at least 10 different bridge pickups in that guitar before settling on the Nazgul. I have similar taste in tone to the bands you mentioned.

I sent you a PM ;)

X2N. And I'm not a dimarzio fan. It's tight, evenly eq'd, and has enough output for any type of metal.

EMG 81 and 60 combo. I know a lot of people don't care for it but....

I play/listen to the same type of music. Jacksons also use the wood configuration you are referring to, which I play.

SD Nazgul. Highly under rated pickup, it's gaining in popularity though and for a reason.
SD Black Winter, it's a Distortion, but just a bit better.
SD Distortion, at this point I'd do a Black Winter first though.

If you like to pay too much for pickups: ;)
Motor City Solution in either Alnico or ceramic. My alnico solution is probably one of my best sounding pickups I have.

I'm not a fan of Bare Knuckle. I have Warpigs in my 7 string BC Rich and for what they cost, I'm not impressed. I think for all the options out there, like SD custom shop and Motor City....Bare Knuckle is just priced too steep.
