The most optimal is a tester that tests for actual transconductance and a maxi-matcher. Too rich for my blood.

me too man.

i'll pay laura the extra few bux for burned in and matched power amp tubes when i need them!

preamp tubes, like i said, i'll use my ear after i test for good/bad, leaks, gas, quality, etc on mine.

i do wish i had one of those nice ones though....they're sweet and really nostalgic!

there's a thread over on grailtone i got involved in with a dude from europe who's really into tube testers.

http://forum.grailtone.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=54482

theres some good info there, the dude knows his shit, and is really passionate about and appreciative of the older models too!

I have a Mercury 990.

Small box, tests shorts, leakage and emission. I saw them between 50-90$. Does a good job for my purposes.

thats basically what my superior td55 is....portable too, so, if need be, it's useful other places than home.

Thats a nice device.

It looks like build quality of the td55 is better, sturdier, the Mercury with its thin plastic enclosure does not really apply for on the road usage, though I know it is meant to be.
