Pairing tubes

When you pair tubes what are the order in which they are paried? If you are looking at the back of the amp how are they numbered? THANKS .....

For power tubes, they are paired from the outside inward. If there are 4 tubes, then the middle 2 tubes are a pair and the outer 2 tubes are a paired.

For numbering preamp tubes, they started from the closest tube to the input jack. If there are 7 preamp tubes then V1 is closest to the input jack and V7 is furthest from the input jack.
