I've been building my own parts mutts for nearly 20 years and continue to enjoy creating killer guitars out components. Whether it's a replica of something else or an original creation, I'm a huge fan of parts guitars.

Because of this, I recently created a Facebook page called "Mutts Rule". This page if for everyone who likes to build guitars from parts...those who like to "roll their own". For any of you who are on Facebook, here is the link...check us out and join up!

https://www.facebook.com/partsguitars

Looking forward to viewing builds in progress, past builds, discussing build ideas and swapping parts and resources.
No specific brand affiliations...mutts are universal. Just because its pretty, doesn't mean it plays well, and vice versa.

Show off your hot-rods, parts-casters, refins, customs and frankensteins.

Also, let's show off our RT mutts right here

Whaddaya got?

My two "parts guitars" are these:

Top one is a cheap Strat copy body with an Allparts neck on it. Cheap single coil in the neck and a Gibson humbucker in the bridge (I think it's a Burstbucker 3...). One of my favorite guitars even though it cost almost nothing to put together. I put a Floyd on it then took that off in favor of the vintage style trem.

The second one was a Kramer 610 that the body went south on so I picked up a Focus body and there we go! Sweet guitar back in business again.

I've also done some fully custom made ones, but I love putting them together from parts! Great idea for putting a group together to show these off!

Snagged this a while back....it's getting the trem cavity filled by a carpenter friend with some mahogany at the moment for a hard tail......BKP Painkiller, Hipshot bridge I beat up with some sandpaper to age out, old 70s Fender neck with some mojo, one pup black Warmoth guard w/1 vol/1 tone and some locking tuners. Getting set up by a friend that works at PRS...should rock pretty hard, knock on wood. :D

Great thread, OP.....liked your FB page; looking forward to seeing some cool stuff.

I've been slapping together Warmoth parts ever since Paul Sr., Ken, and Paul Jr. left Boogie Bodies and started up shop in Ken's backyard garage. This is my most recent build, a bass for recording...

Wow, love it! How heavy is it? Does the Wenge neck make it nosedive at all or does it balance well? I had a Wenge neck years back and it was like a piece of steel...loved the "in-hand" feel but hated what it did to the guitar's overall balance.

How about some tips on mutts or rather, where to get the best parts and what tends to work better together vs. what is not worth the upgrade cost? I want to build a home made tiger or road warn fat strat but worried that i'll end up with a boat anchor because it sounds and plays like shit.

I've had great luck with Musikraft.

After years of not getting it right, i nailed it with this one, lets call it My Ultimutt
0b53492b.jpg

FAT neck custom made by Jerry at Luxxtone.
1984 reissue Floyd with the big block.
Jumbo frets.
Sweet dark ass Rosewood fretboard.
Swamp Ash body from the 1994 CIJ Strat.
It has Sperzel locking tuners on it, for no good reason.
BKP Aftermath Bridge (coil tapped) push push pot for splitting on the last tone knob
Two lindy Fralin Vintage hots in the mid neck.
This guitar is the single most harmonically sensitive guitar ever.
I can do the sickest divebombs with racing harmonics everywhere.
Never goes out of tune, unless the strings die.

Here it is in all it's glory. Mutts rule.
You certainly did! Your guitar is one of my favorites from RT. Awesome!

Amazing work. I need to get around to doing one. The body to neck joint seems to be a tricky part.

Musikraft and Warmoth are my two overall favorites, but you can get some good stuff elsewhere. I've even done builds using parted out Fenders, Charvels, etc.
Sometimes you'll need to do a bit of fret dressing even on new necks but for the most part the companies I mentioned make great stuff. Somebody posted on my Facebook page that his Stainless Steel fretted Warmoth necks have all been perfect...no dressing/leveling needed. I've only owned one of those, but it fits that description...it was perfect right out of the box.

It feels pretty well balanced. I think the korina offsets it nicely. It's a fantastic guitar, for sure. Very open and "woody" sounding, due to the thin body finish and unfinished neck.
