Partying in the 80's

I'm 29 and I'm happy I grew up when I did because I loved and still love a lot of the music from the late 80's/early 90's. It was a great mix of technical playing mixed with some really great songwriters who had more of a '70's vibe.

BUT, sometimes I wish that I could have experienced what it was like to be in a band throughout the 80's. Either in an original band or in a cover band on the strip, raking in the chicks and drugs and just flat out living it up!!! :rock:

I never liked the whole hairspray or glam image, but damn those bands partied like noone else! I also am not much of a party guy. NO drugs and very little drinking here, but in another life or a parallel universe, I think I would be a coked-out animal getting a ton of chicks and rocking the 80's scene! :lol: :LOL: My old drummer who's also around my age got me thinking about this the other day. He said "dude, if I could be a rockstar in any decade, I would choose the 80's so I could party and not worry about the consequences!"

I moved to LA in 1985. How fun was it? How ridiculous was the partying? Use your imagination and be very creative. :yes: The band I moved to LA with at the Troubador in Hollywood. Rocking the '84 Charvel San Dimas :rock:

That was one of the main things I didn't get about the 90's. What good was it to be in a band if you weren't enjoying yourself? Why were those guys so miserable and WHY did they get even more miserable when they made it huge and became filthy rich? :scared: Plus girls didn't wash their hair and dressed like slobs and ate way too many cheeseburgers if you know what I mean. The guy who works for me is 31 and has been working here for 16 years. He loved the cheesy, glam bands as a kid and their videos. He complained through the whole 90's about why the chicks tried to look hot and dress hot in the 80's and how women in the 90's were the laziest, most boring decade and that was HIS glory days.

Ha! Aint it the truth. :cry: I was so miserable as a teen trying to play my depressing music and fit into the grunge scene. However, I always had hot, skinny girlfriends who showered regularly. :lol: :LOL: If it wasn't for Alice in Chains and Pantera, I would've HATED my generation of music. And BTW, Pantera was the last true party band so thank God for them. :rock:
 
I'm 40 and cut my teeth in the 80's and glad I did... fun music and some of it challenged you technically. That said, I loved a lot of the 90's music because IMHO some of the bands had much better written songs and I welcomed those bands killing what was becoming a laughable trend in the music of 80's. To me there doesn't have to be one was better than the other. Just like not all 90's music was angst ridden..... not all 80's music is the musical equivalent of Velveeta.

I seem to find really good bands no matter the decade. :yes:

I saw Pantera a couple of times in LA in the 90's. They may have been partying but there were very, very few women at those parties. Know what I mean? The ratio was easily 100:1 guys to chicks at those Pantera gigs. Their partying may have been just as crazy as the 80's guys, but let's just say they had quite a bit smaller of a, how do you say it........ selection. :yes:

We used to go see Poison in the clubs before they made it and it wasn't because they were good. Those gigs were like 10 women for every 5 guys. I remember the first time we saw them was at the Troubador and we got there right before they came on and I swear that place just absolutely reeked of perfume more than any place I had ever been. I'm still not sure if the perfume was from the chicks, or if it was from Poison. :D
 
I dont think the 90s were miserable and boring at all. I did highschool in the 90s. Had a blast. Tons of chicks all the time. (excuse me while I cry into my sleeve) The chix didnt present themselves quite as good as they did in the 80s but a hot skank is a hot skank :rock:

I used to play in punk and industrial bands in the 90s. The chix i was around still wore lots of leather and vinyl :rock: And the drugs - yikes.

Knowing what i did in the 90s, i think if i was around in the 80s id be dead by now :lol: :LOL:
 
late 70s and early 80s where the best. traveled all over.. same story.... from what I remember! :D parties everywhere. good times. rare to see fights. everything was about having a great time. I miss it. long hair.. no hair spray, no spandex.. just good old ass metal. no one cared if you brought 3 stacks. everyone wanted everyone to have a great time. Everyplace we played.. free drinks.. and free other stuff.. thats all I am gonna say :D


Funny,, I wished at times I would have been around in the late 60's early 70's, and kept some of those killer amps.
 
:lol: :LOL: so i'm not alone, i'm 29 next month and have often wished i could have been gigging in the 80s after hearing so many great stories. i'll pass on the booze and drugs though along with the clothing and hair styles. the music, the crazy color floyded guitars, big racks etc...yeah i'm all in for that.

I graduated high school and started playing clubs in '87...good times! I just caught the last few years of it, but that was enough. I wouldn't have made it out alive had I started any sooner. :lol: :LOL:
 
I was 18 in 1989. Graduated that year. Wasnt old enough to "leagally" drink .....but... :lol: :LOL:

The Parties in the late 80's were just insane. All the girls were so glammed up trying to 'out sexy' the next chick. I was reading in the upper part of this thread where the Grunge came in.....I never got into that one bit.
Just stayed stuck in 1987 forever...... :rock:

Crazy colored, Floyded guitars didn't really look that cool in the 80's on guys that look like they just got done with baseball practice. There was an image and the guitar was just a part of that image.

If you want to take away the clothing and the hair styles you'd have to take away the women. Do you think there wasn't a reason that guys kept getting prettier and prettier throughout the 80's? It wasn't cause we liked putting on eyeliner or ratting our hair to the sky. It brought more women to your shows, plain and simple. I was in bands were people were dating Playboy Bunnies and adult film stars and legit actresses and models and strippers. It was like a freaking National Geographic special on birds entering their mating season, with the male birds all tarted up and the clothes and hair being like our plumage ("Beautiful plumage, the Norwegian Blue")
