I have a seafoam green Timmy that I love...never realized it was different from the original though. Any ideas what the functional/tonal differences are, if any?

From Paul C:

"I decided to change the chip in the batch to the LM1458 for something a tiny bit smoother. It's in a socket, so it's easy to change it back to the stock 4559 if somebody wants. These will only be available from humbucker - they're getting the whole batch."

"The green pedals used a LM1458 instead of the standard 4559. I made that known when I put these out, and that's what the op is talking about. It was never about the color - just the sound of the chip used in the different colored batch.

From other threads on TGP:

"I've owned both and I prefer the surf green Timmy to the blue one. It's a little bit smoother to my ears... not as harsh."

From another TGP post:

"The LM1458 is great in the Timmy. I tried out a half dozen different chips and easily liked that one best. It's a tad lower gain-wise, but it smooths out the top end in a really nice way. I've been running it in there for at least a year and a half. "
That would explain why I like it so much as a lead boost. I'd probably like the original one more as a basis for an overall dirty tone.
I had a first version and ended up using it as a boost as well, just seemed to work best at that,,,,miss that.

I tested a Timmy against my Koko boost for a good while. In the end the Koko won out, but if I hadn't run them side by side to compare the minutia of details, I'd have been perfectly happy with the Timmy for a mild boost kind of pedal.

There's a couple Tims on CL in Nashville.

Only difference between a Tim and Timmy is the boost and the built in send/return right?

I believe there is an additional gain stage in the Tim, if I'm not mistaken.

I've been preaching these pedals for eons and have never come across any one of them to be harsh. :dunno: IMO Paul makes one of the most natural sounding OD's out there.
Love my Timmy too, but I can see where those who are used to a Tubescreamer might find them harsh. I am going to try a tl072 op amp in mine. Supposed to make it sound better with vox amps.

Just sold my Tim dam shoulda hung on to it now that he stopped making them. I sold it and just bought a green Timmy. I liked the Tim for boosting R2 on my mk4 but it was kinda big and bulky and I didn't use the loop or the extra boost stage. so I figured the smaller Timmy would do the job. The chips just push into sockets so you can buy them all and try them.

I ordered both awhile back and kept the Timmy, but don't remember why anymore?

Think they're pretty much the same other than the loop?
