so the ethos gets touted as a dumble pedal most of the time, and yes it owns at that,
but i also manage to put together a pretty sweet rock crunch sound with it in front of my peacemaker

please refer to exhibit A:

http://soundcloud.com/mentoneman/warrior-peacemaker

this is a melody i've had bouncing around my head for eons-don't mind the bass/drums; garage band preset drum patterns, and bass was played using the mini on screen keyboard and my mouse.

peacemaker was hotplated at -16, mic'ed the gh30 in the bogner 4x12 with sm58, scumback in the tech 21 wet cab mic'ed with second sm58
tyler strat/holmes 450 pickup

lexicon lambda interface into garage band

i liked this tone

I enjoyed the clip after the intro rhythm part, always liked your single note stacato chord tones. the amp sounds small to me though, not the juggernaut that internet legend states to run forest RUN!!!!!! when played. I think you are squishing it too much with the attenuation and not pulling the cork and letting it breath.

nice dude! I like that tone too
it's fun to play through-the rebound and throttle factor is there for my hands which these days are not as responsive as i'd like

yeah i'm normally not into -16 but for some reason it didn't depress me as much this time around!

i'm trying to keep from adding more preamp gain at the pedal so that the guitar still behaves like a guitar and not a kazoo, and the treble and bass volumes are between 1 and 2 so yes there is a lot more room to crank up.

may make a few adjustments and try again....

Sounds great Pat! I always enjoy your clips and playing. Some of the best tone on our board.

I gotta tell ya bro, Im not sure that I like this tone that much. Its weird though, there are some parts that I think that it sounds pretty good but for the most part, it just doesnt sit right with me.

I like the playing and the melody and maybe that has something to do with it? Perhaps I just dont like the tone in this application...

yeah it's not a major tone statement; lambda and 2x 58s into garage band don't a picasso make, just the fact that i got a rockier tone from the ethos which normally gets represented as a dumble pedal all the time-

but it was fun to play around with that crunchy tone as the feel rebounded and oinked pleasantly in the room, and it didn't sound as bad as i remembered -16 on the hotplate to sound....i mean MINUS -16 on the hotplate!!...that's a major tone faux pas these days!

Listening on monitors right now, at:33 the shit starts to happen and that is due to your awesome chops and feel.

The tone kind of reminds me of your RT jam clip, you were going for plexi with the axefx. I guess I am just looking for more explosion, amp about to bust apart tones.

you're right-
there is a compressed politeness about this tone and the pedal preamp sound sorta throttles the amp a bit, which is barely awake and -16 to boot.

rockstah and PT have way more of the high end-y amp meltdown fringe of classic rock tipping toward metal thing happening.
i tend to stick to more of the velvety ej side so this much edge is more the exception for me.

and you HOM/RT types....unless it's fortin jose modded uberschall concord skidding into a chainsaw testing plant distortion and swinging from floyd bar to floyd bar like ADD sugar pumped preschoolers on a jungle gym you're never happy!

LOL!! I Think what I was trying to say was that in the end, I liked the tone, Im just not sure that I liked it for the tune that you played. Does that make sense?

Thanks for posting. The Mojave is the PM that Victor Mason added the HG mod? I think I read where you had had him work on it for you. Keep them coming...

you know i loves my palooka :D

my vertex modded plexitone is way more metal, and probably a much better fit for this, especially the faster stuff, but the main thrust was getting rock tone out of the ethos, at pretty much low volumes.

yup the amp has the HG mod which is still low gain around these parts ;)

the amp rocks...and it's still the best marshall type tone, pound for pound i've heard or played. when it's loud, it does the throttle thing and a dynamic thing so well.

Been backing off the gain for awhile Pat, boost pedals are all but gone and have low output bridge buckers in most of my charvels now. Here is an example of what I like in the low gain department, after hering this clip years ago I went on my marshall binge.....

That is the shit right there, Ant just diming it and ripping.

Yeah I still enjoy hair on fire robo gain while looking up at the bottom of a bottle now and then :D

ant kills it always.

the PM is just a beast. it's all about trying to control the volume without loosing the living breathing godzilla dynamic.

unfortunately there are so many ways to loose the organic vibe between the pedal, hotplate, converter in the lambda, the low tech mastering software in garage band, the export to itunes, and finally the upload to soundcloud.

i will press on...

i used a limiter in GB to try and keep the level high on the clip without distorting but i may have pumped it too much....

Has to be a recording lost in translation thing as I am sure you are hearing the goods in the room. The levels are higher, some clipping, and I am starting to hear some more organinic. Maybe I am looking for something you are not trying to capture? RVS is another guy that captures this amp ready for meltdown tone but still maintaining some form of character, his Peters amp he has has some of the best close to meltdown tone on the forums imo.

Here is RVS playing with his Peters,

Screw the hood and drag that sucker into the garage and let loose the hounds of hell!

Nice playing...I dug that

I should have stated that the 2nd clips playing was awesome! I still cannot dig in like that on a plexi type amp, still trying but not happening yet.

its funny i was thinking RVS too as another cat here that gets the kind of tone i gravitate toward as well.
the last clip was PM volumes on 2, -12 hotplate, and i moved the dry cab mic to the scumback from the gh30

i'm creeping up the ladder-next stop vol on 3/-8 :D

update:

ok so i redid the last recording once more without the limiter, and tried to match more of what i was hearing in the room by adding about 3db of gain on the gtr tracks in the 3-5k zone to lift the recording chain blanket :D
