Peavey 6505+ Head

Hi guys, so I was just thinking about my current music gear and just now got to thinking about my Peavey 6505+ head and footswitch that's been sitting in the closet collecting dust for some time now. I'll try my best not to make this post so long.

I bought the Peavey 6505+ head back in April 2012, the previous owner I bought it off of didn't have the footswitch or the factory wood piece that goes behind the front metal grill and said it had the factory tubes in and said it needed to be re-tubed and biased. So I put in some different preamp tubes I had lying around in but the amp at the time and it still kinda hummed and crackled here and there. So I had bought a practically new quad of EH 6L6's and put those in too. Fast forward to May of 2014 and I had the Peavey repaired at Amp N' Guitar Doctor in Canton, OH and a while later the Peavey was making a lot of noise, etc. so I stopped using it again. In December of 2018, I took it to Faster Planet Computer/Hammer Tube Amps in Canton, OH they worked on my Peavey 6505+ head and shortly after that the amp seemed to be working fine at rehearsals but them the volume started dropping right in the middle of songs and had a "Blanket over the speaker sound" and I stopped using it since then.

Does any Peavey 6505+ owners know what the problem(s) may be?

Do you have clips of this noise? I mean it is a 5150, they’re not quiet by any stretch of the imagination but it would help to hear it.

Volume dropping out can be because you don’t play it often and the pots need sprayed with electronic cleaner to prevent poor contact of the wiper to the conductive traces due to either oxidation or debris.

Volume dropout can also be due to bad preamp tubes. New doesn’t mean good. Keep a known good stash for troubleshooting only.

I also had a problem with not enough solder on the main board at a fet that controls the footswitch a long time ago. I reflowed/soldered every solder joint and solved that one problem. You may have a similar problem where the board needs reviewed under a magnifying glass and possibly reflowing. With a hot soldering station and the board removed this actually doesn’t take as long as it seems.

Another common problem on volume dropouts on 5150s is tube pins needing retensioned.

Another thing to try is taking contact cleaner and spraying it on a 1/4” Jack and then pushing/pulling it in and out of each of the effects loop jacks. The jacks get caked with crud and can cause these issues.

Try these things first and then we can narrow it down from there.

Def try the effects loop thing…It’s quick and easy. That was the reason mine had a drop out.

Later time I played it through my other guitarist's Bugera 2x12 closed back cab with a Celestion vintage 30 and G12K100 and

After I had it worked on back in 2018 and got it back from repair, it wasn't making the crackling, static noises like when I first got the amp. After a couple songs into practice, the volume started dropping and had the blanket over speakers sound and now I remember that no matter how high I was turning the volumes up on either channel, the volume was not increasing. Sorry a lot of this is just now coming back from memory ? And the thing is, I know tubes are horribly expensive right now and I wouldn't even know what to get as I'm on a budget.

I think I still have all the factory tubes that came with the amp.
