(this is a repost from another forum, I got no answer there)

Hi,

I own one 2010 butcher, the new version... When I bought it I remember reading the previous version where based on a jcm800. For the newer version i read that it's what the JSX50 should have been. But on what is a JSX50 based on?

From what I hear, it's seems like it's based on a plexi type amp, not a JCM800...

There is not a lot of sounds demo on the web so i'll put this for a reference.

This is the sound of it on the crunch channel, boosted with a sd-1, all volume maxed, master maxed. (through a loadbox), bass 8, mid 5, treble 6, presence 5, gain 6, gain boost on. It's not a modern distortion and not as gainy as you may think sound but what a sound. ;)

ps : I sent the signal through NeuralDSP NTS cab section for the miking parts. thumbs up to @ML Sound Lab , this sounds good. Love moving mikes and the IR are excellent with this setup
ps2 : the "master volumes" are really bad. No way my amp with the volume maxed and master near "0" sounds like what I heard on those recording. It's all spitty and fuzzy.

Ok, last try then after that it will remain a mystery...

The recording process was less than optimal in the first clips, I think we all agree..
I used a resistive dummy load and my presence was way too low.. And i'm not sure on the whole IR thing.

This is with real mics (2 sm57 type, one on a wgs veteran 30, one on a et65)..
I really really bumped the presence, like 8.5 on 10.

I hope you like this one better, it's a real recording, no shortcut. I just play whatever went through my head, nothing structured

It's more "plexi" like I think, more biting.. Maybe a bit too much?

It clips a little, sorry, forgot to watch the meters ;(

I have the newer version. I also have 25 other amps. The Butcher MK2 is unlike any other really.

The 2nd version of the Butcher is the 50w JSX that never made it into production.

When Satch went to Marshall, Peavey was in development of a revoiced 50w JSX head for Joe. When he ended his Peavey endorsement, Peavey rebadged it as The Butcher and it went into a short lived production run.

Thanks for the replies, yes I read that it is was the jsx50 should have been, except with two more power tubes

As someone said before, It's a sound I quite never heard before... Not as spiky as a jcm800, with a gain structure similar to a plexi.
That amp need to be boosted to have a somewhat modern-er sound. If not, it's 1975

I'm not familiar with the marshall major but for some reason the sound make me think of deep purple "machine head"

There is definitively that el34 signature. Oh, and it's loud. stupid loud. there is a fx loop pre and post volume knob who helps tame that. The masters are useless, all they do is add sputter and fuzz.

I got what I think it sound like... an Orange amp. if I play anything ghost it's really close
