Ive got my eye on a used peavey 4X12 its price is very attractive but im a vintage 30 guy, Ive used them with all of my randalls, My Current TSL and an Older B52 At-100 and im just wondering what the differences are?
thanks

I'm currently running both of those speakers right now. My 90's Peavey Sheffield 1290 4x12, and a very recent Mesa vertical 2x12 with Vintage 30's.
Although I like them both, they sound quite different. The vin 30's seem to have more high mid aggression, and the 1290's seem to have more of a balanced midrange, it doesn't jump out or sound scooped, just kinda neutral. I find the 1290's to be dark overall though. I don't hear any ice pick treble frequencies.
The two cabs sound great together. But, on their own the peaveys are dark and the Celestions are mid aggressive. That's what I hear out of 'em anyway!

You probably won't like the 1200's if you have good taste. They are pretty fizzy and obnoxious sounding speakers.

Which Peavey cab? There are several Sheffield speakers.

1200 - found in 5150/6505 cabs, 'similar' to Greenbacks
1230 - I think these are in the MS cabs. Not sure what Celestion they'd sound similar to, either H30 or T75
1290 - ??
XXX - Found in XXX cabs, 'similar' to a V30 - I personally like the XXX speakers

I will agree the XXX speakers are the best sounding out of the bunch. The 1200s are a flop IMO and I have no experience with the rest.

I actually like the 1290s with certain amps. Not my favorite speaker(V30's are) but the are cool and I can certainly work with them and get tones I like. I kind of think of them as a crispy/sizzly variant of a 75 watt Celestion. With your TSL you'll probably want to keep the presence on the low side to avoid the crispy sizzle thing. They of course do not have the mids like V30's but your amp has knobs to help change the sound. :D

Thanks guys, I think I am gonna just spend the extra money and see if i can find another Randall Warhead cab or something else with the V30's ive got a B52 Cab that roars and has some unknown type of "custom 120" speakers but they have the mids and they have the tight punchy hit u in the face bass that I just love and works well with a V30 cab..

PV cabs blow, total waste of money ... V30's do too, i've played both.

Greenbacks or Scumbacks are the way to go with Marshalls, some Weber & Eminence as well.

Only exception is if ur using V30's for drop tune Metal.

1200's are a neutral speaker. The simple fact that they can take a beating and still keep going is why i love them. They start to shine at higher band volumes and only project what the amplifier's voicing really sounds like. I keep a sheffield cabinet around for tuning amplifiers. If the amplifier was not voiced using them and was voiced using a more popular speaker, then obviously the negative traits are going to show through a neutral sounding speaker with relatively no extensive high end rolloff.

I do admit they are amplifier specific and i understand why most refuse to use them, however they are the most neutral sounding guitar amp speaker i have ever heard while also built like brick shithouses. They can take a beating without overheating. Definitely worth their weight in gold.
