So I've been picking up some awesome older amps lately. Today I was lucky enough to grab a VTM 120 for $100! BUT the deal was it came without tubes (removed after I tested to make sure it worked and sounded properly). I've heard some great things about this amp... and now to ask all of you for your suggestions:

What kind of preamp tubes should I go for? And what spots?

And of course I know they are biased for 6l6, any particular favorites? This is my first of this variation. My JSX has kt77, and my Laney AOR has el34.

Anythings I should look for one this amp? Plus/Negative?

On a budget, my old VTM absolutley SLAYED with a set of Shuguang 12ax7's in all positions and Sovtek WXT+ in the power section.

Holy smokes that is a CRAZY GOOD DEAL!! Some old-school Soundgarden with that amp. Kim Thayil played one of those for years he became rectum-fryed with Mesa

I have Ruby power tubes in mine and they made it come alive. Not sure what's in the preamp.

Eh, stick anything in there. It'll sound good. I have all Penta Lab Chinese in my modded VTM120 for exactly 1 year now. No probems. I have a stock VTM60 with JJ "high gain" pre's. I even have the original Peavey "super 7s" 12AX7 preamp tubes. They all sound good. My 60 has a pair of TAD 6L6s and my 120 has Winged C 6L6s. If I had to buy new tubes, I'd call Valve Queen "laura" and probably order some Rubys. Good amp. It likes a boost pedal too.

Yeah I'm pretty stoked on it. It's stock at the moment but when I tested it out, it was killer. I just bought a laney aor 100 last week and it's in the shop getting tweaked out. And bubba, after watching your clip of the fortin modded vim is what made me look for one. I had to drive 6 hours to get the deal but it was totally worth it. I'm going to order a hand full of pres and mix and match, and see what's best for my ear?

Can this amp take kt88?

Not without a decent amount of mods. 6L6s Sound great in this amp though. It's a really good amp stock. Even has a Jose style clipping circuit (Comp dip switch).

Yeah I saw. I'm excited to get some tubes in it and jam around with it. I've talked to mike about the kfdm you have.. And I'm just debating between that and the Fja nick mod. Both seem right up my alley. Again not because the original tone is bad, but I like to tweak the shit out of things for my playing style.

I might be picking up an ultra plus on the cheap this week too.
