I'm in the market for that Marshall distorsion ton, I am boneified Iron Maiden fanboy and I'm looking to see if this head can achieve that maiden tone without the $1500 price tag, also does this amp play nice at lower volumes. I mean I cant crank a 100w head in my basement with the family upstairs.

So.......
1) I play mostly Maiden Metallica (mostly older stuff), Priest, some AIC, Green Day, etc
2) 90% home player, studio 1-2 times a month, but I rarely take my amps.

Thanks

Nick F.

Why not pick up a JMP-1 used? Maiden still uses those today so the cross over to Priest or other 80's metal would be certified Grade A beef I'd think. So the power amp.. use existing power amp on a tube amp with an effects loop OR get that electro harmonix 44 caliber power amp. That'll get the job done.

Post the price you'd like to pay, and see if we can help.

There's lots of sleeper amps out there, that can be not so hard on the wallet.

I'd take a Peavey Butcher, Ultra, Ultra Plus, etc. over the Windsor.

Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister 18. If it's in your budget, it's your IDEAL home amp for the music you list.

The Peavey Windsor I find to be a one trick pony (or what's the expression for that?) And a mediocre one at that.

Thing is, peavey did a blind test between a JMP and a windsor and the amp def held up and fooled a few people. Problem is, nobody ever seems to get those tones when they bring the amp home! I agree with posting up an amount you are willing to spend.. Even a used randall RM50 with a plexi module will get ya close enough for example..

Im looking to spend at most $500 and used is an option

I had a Windsor head... LOUD!!! Not a lot of gain or good tone. Put some pedals in front of it and you may be able tonget a good sound out of it. Use a JMP-1 into the FX return and you may do even better. Get a power soak or attenuator so your family doesn't hate you. Not a stand-alone amp by any means.

I second the RM50. You can usually find the combo for about $350, and a good stock plexi module for about $150. Then you can add a clean if you want for about $100, or if you spend a bit more you can get a modified marshall based module, and get some really killer tone!!! They also play nice at low volumes.

I just picked up a stock XTC module for 105 off the grail forum. Pretty much new. Randall has officially discontinued the line now so prices on all this stuff is going to drop. A RM50 combo plus a 115$ or so used blackface Plexi or SL+. DONE. Seriously.. it isn't rocket science technology so you don't have to worry about massive failures. This stuff could be iconic 10 years down the line.

I wonder if Egnator is going to have the modular series made overseas along with the tourmaster etc since he is the brains behind the modular series. I wouldn't count it out completely yet.

Marshall DSL. $500-$600 all day long. If you want Marshall tone get a Marshall.

dave murray uses DSL 100s, with a JMP-1 going into the effects loop.
