I like to have a gate running upfront to prevent exactly what you describe, particularly when EMGs are involved. I often have problems with EMGs making additional noise around electronics. Cant go wrong with a Duncan Distortion, I think that's what Mike uses to test stuff in the shop. I also really like the super distortion coupled with the Fortin tightness as well.

When I was talking with Mike about getting my amp modded a few years ago(damn, 4 years!) I specifically told him that my main guitar was sporting an EMG81. I didn't have any issues at all with it. I stopped playing EMGs and really my amp has done very well with every passive I've played through it(BKP Painkiller, Suhr Aldrich, JB, Jazz, 500T, Fender Atomic, a couple of Squier Pickups and my main guitar sporting a First Act pickup). Out of all of those pickups my favorite two are my Squier high output(17k) and the First Act low output(9.2k) pickups. I'm not picky with pickups, but I do like these two best. I did have to wax pot the First Act pickup because of squealing, but after that it has been fine. I also refuse to use a noise gate.

I don't use a noise gate, and Gower/Fortin amp gets along with my MCP's, too.
I like the Angel Dust and Hot Head, but I would imagine that most of Wades pickups would work well with a Fortin.

Active PU's in general, by design, aren't the best of pick ups for modded Marshall type circuits.
