My buddy's got a beautiful '91 PRS that's really dark and bassy sounding with the stock pups. What's a good pup (on the hot side) that will brighten and tighten it up? Suhr Aldrich? Thanks in advance.

BKP Ceramic Nailbomb or Aftermath. I only use them in my Custom 24s. Tight, warm, huge.

Duncan JB.

Alternately he could also start by fooling with cap values.

Bare Knuckle Painkiller in darker guitar would sound really good and a tight in my opinion.

what is the guitar made of?

mahogany body?
maple cap?
maple neck with rosewood board?

an aldrich would work for that
so would a duncan custom or a pearly gates,

or even an EVO1 from dimarzio.

a lawrence l500xl is an interesting pickup too....i really like them lately!

Mahogany Body/Neck?

I would try EMGs. I have EMGs in my PRS Mike Mushok SE and the thing sounds monstrous. It adds the high mids and cuts a little of the flub inherent to all mahogany guitars (if it is indeed all Mahogany/entirely a dark wood.

i was going to say the duncan ahb3 blackouts....love it in one of my LPs...has so much bite!

Depending on which prs, I'm assuming its either a custom 22 or 24 with a wide fat neck.

I've found the bare knuckle pickups are of good benefit. Did wonders for my custom24.
Email tim @ bkp, he should be able to sort you out!

Thank for all of your replies guys. I forgot to clarify that it's a CU24 with a mahogany body and a maple top. Not sure about the neck itself. Rosewood FB of course.

bare knuckle cold sweat
most open sounding ceramic pickup ever

try a emg 81 ive got one in my PRS singlecut and it sounds awesome, but i am wanting to try a Duncan Distortion ive heard nothing but good reviews on those

i'd highly recommend a duncan custom sh-5 or the ahb3 blackouts
a suhr aldrich will sound good too, as well as a JB.

this being the case then, bridge position, i'd highly recommend a duncan custom sh-5 (adjusted to around 1/16 on the treble side, and 1/8 or touch higher on the bass side) or the ahb3 blackouts (just about as close to the strings as you can get without it feeding back).

an alnico 2 pro neck is pretty much a can't go wrong pickup in the neck of a guitar with those woods, if you like nice sweet neck tone, that is super customizable responsewise with a few simple adjustments to the poles and height settings. the older A2P necks from duncan are my favorite neck pickup, aside from a few 70's gibson stock pickups i have....they just have this sweetness to them (i havent tried the slash model).
