is there a pickup that has simillar output to a tonezone, but without the tonezone's muddy character and will fit or balance well in a maple neck/maple fretboard guitar with a solid alder body without being overly trebbly?

i took the JB out of it. not the pickup for this guitar at all.

was looking at wolfgang pickups...sound great with basswood, but alder is a much harder wood and i would like to have the dimarzio type attitude in this guitar. i like well mannered solo's but aggressive rhythm capability.

i dont have a clue as to what pickups to put in this thing.

probably an air norton in the neck - i have no idea what to put in the bridge.

shoot me everything you've got - boutique or not as long as clips are available. im open to anything at this point minus actives EMG's

thanks

I'd suggest taking a look at High Order Pickups. It's a one man operation and he custom winds pickups to your specs, for $70 a pickup. I've got a set of his pups and another on order right now. I highly recommend them. Crunchy and heavy, but really articulate and sweet. Miles ahead of Duncan and Dimarzio at a lower price plus specs? You can't go wrong.

Tell Jeff (owner and builder) your gear and the guitar it's going into, and tell him what you want and he'll do it. I'm never going back another pickup manufacturer. Dude's a wizard.

Jeff makes great pickups and probably my favorite PAF style humbucker. The 8 week wait is a pain though.

i would be ashamed to tell him my gear im using - it should not matter. the guitar's precussive response should apply regardless of the amplifier.

does his work varry much customer to customer?

first time i have heard about him... 8 weeks to wait? ill think about it and listen to what others have but im going to shoot him an email later and pick his brain

it took me 15 months to get this guitar. i dont want to wait another 8 weeks to get it running

Try the Breed Bridge. It's thick without being muddy and has good mids.

My fave thru the past months has been the Suhr Aldrich......

I have Mahogany body, Maple Neck and fretboard........
sounds GREAT!!

Thanks man, I actually cropped the image from a t-shirt.

Have you tried a Duncan Custom Custom? IME it has rounded highs with lots of mids. A downside is that the bass is a tad loose.
If you swap the A2 magnet to A8 you tighten the bass and add a little more gain.

The gear rundown is just to give him a better idea of how he can get you what you want. He absolutely NAILED what I wanted in my first set of pups.

I use the Dimarzio Super 3 in my Maple/Alder guitars and it just kills. Someone mentioned the Breed and if you don't need high output and are OK with having to compensate with EQ, the Breed might work--check out my review with sound clips on Jemsite.com.

The Crunch Lab is a new, great alternative to the Tone Zone. The EQ curve is not as pronounced and it's got great grind. My Jemsite.com review with sound clips is here:

Check out the clips and see what you think.

Cheers,

really liking what i hear from the super 3 and aldrich - although with an alder body im affraid the aldrich might have that high frequency emphasis that will make the guitar too bright sounding. so im leaning more towards a super 3 with a possible magnet change to get the output closer to the aldrich (without adding more windings to the coil)

or a possible magnet change in the aldrich to mellow it out just a little. with a dark guitar it would be perfect, with a bright one i dont need so much high end emphasis.

the afwayu is an OK pickup but its sloppy in the low end department simillar to how a tonezone acts.

i do like that the aldrich is an overwound PAF pro style pickup. thats essentially what the ernie ball pickups made by dimarzio were designed around and the basis of wolfgang pickups as well.

wolfgangs have a simillar attitude to the afwayu's, otherwise i would go with them.

thanks for all the help guys appreciate the suggestions
