Ok, So I have an 80's flying V. Like the original pickup but it's a little hot for what I need. It's 16+K. I know DC resistance is not necessarily accurate on actual PU output but it's all I can measure for an idea. I've been using Wolfetone Marshallheads which are in the 9 range and right now they might not be quite enough oomph into my superlead. What might be in-between hot PAF and high output alnico for a classic but driving tone? I don't like ceramics and the Screamin' Demon (around 12K) I tried was stiff and lifeless. Anyone have any experience with the Duncan CS pickups like the S-Deco or Brobucker?

the brobucker is a great pickup. we (the members of the duncan forum) came up with that a few years back as a collective to fill a void of an extra hot PAF and it really fit the bill. more kick than a '59 for example but not as over the top as the customs or JB etc. it's smooth with no aggressive mid push or scoop or icepick highs, very well balanced with a nice solid bottom and it can do clean to high gain with no problem without getting mushy or too dark under higher gain. loads of guys on the duncan forum had them in all different types of guitars so you may want to ask there to get views on it in a V since someone may have done it. i do know that from my brass trem, hard ash body maple neck charvel to loads of les pauls and some SGs and explorers it got great reviews from the forum members so it seems to work in various guitars well and not just X type of guitar. i still kick myself for letting mine go in a charvel i sold a while back but the buyer wanted the guitar with it so i parted ways with it. one of these days i'll order another one though.

Or Motor City Pickups, I've been very impressed with the sets I have. Send Wade an email and he'll get you what you need. Tim at Bare Knuckle Pickups is also great at recommending the right pickups.

Cool, thanks. I'll try the Duncan Forum.

I emailed Tim and he recommended the Rebel Yell.

for bass or guitar?

OP has a flying V guitar... AFAIK Wade doesn't make bass pickups. I didn't recommend any specific models because the best best is to call wade and tell what your using it with and what you want out of it, his recommendations are pretty spot on.

I think what was meant is that these pickups in general have a ton of low end, much moreso than anything else I've tried probably too much - and I really like full thick lows.

ahh ok should have realized as donbarzini is the resident jokster here!

very true the MCP's have a plethora of bass. I use very specific pre distortion EQ so I never felt like they had too much. I'm sure with the wrong rig it could be overwhelming, then again you could just turn the bass down on your amp. they do have some lows though. I agree if you're looking for thin MCP is the wrong choice.

It's funny, I have heard people say this elsewhere and certainly people chimed in here to agree, but I don't hear excessive bass in my MCP pickups - I have the 2nd degree Black Belt and Detroiter sets in Gibby Historics. It very well could be that both guitars are inherently light and flutey sounding, but I could swear even the stock 57 classics had more bass than the MCP's.

How would you compare your MC's to the 57 classics? I'm very familiar with the 57's.

Completely different. The MCP's (keep in mind - to my ears only!) are more modern and aggressive sounding and the 57 classics smoother and more vintage. I love the 57 classics BTW.

I just put a Motor city Afwayu in my Yamaha, and it is crazy good

Also Motor City has great pricing for what you get.

MCP is my fav too. But dont email wade. Call him. hes bad at returning emails.

same price as BKP
I love both
I'll be trying WCR soon too, but those are expensive as f***

+1 on the Rebel Yell....pretty much spot on for what you mentioned you're looking for. Higher output, but not overly.....punchy but with a neutral EQ that doesn't overly enhance any frequency.

Another great choice would be the WCR Fillmore. Similar to the Rebel Yell, with a little more grindy top end which is very cool.

Think I'm gonna try my ass a Rebel Yell. Has anyone had any experience with the S-Deco from Duncan custom shop?
