I have a beater mexi strat that needs pickups. I dont want to put a ton of money into it. Thinkin' hum in bridge and single in neck. But. What? Lol
Alder body/maple board.
It needs to get 80's tones. Lol

I have a JB, or a Dimarzio Super D for your bridge and a Duncan Classic Stack for your neck. $45 each! CHEEP!

Messing with one of mine as well right now.. that's my fave configuration but the problem is, a lot of those singles won't like the 500k pot. I'll let you know how mine sounds in a couple of days because after 4-5 pickup swaps i have come to realize i like tight lower end and smoother highs. So, my solution is one 250k vol pot, no tone. I'm going back to a JB with pro track in the neck. See what happens...

As for the HS3, didn't dig it much at all. WAyyyyyy too wimpy and bright with 500k despite the documentation suggesting that it works best with it.

My favorite bridge pickups have been the JB and the Duncan Jazz neck model. Surprisingly the Jazz neck put into the bridge gives a very full and smooth sound that I like and it's not harsh like some super high output pickups can be.

duncan quarter pound in the neck (or a dimarzio sds1 if you want a slightly fatter tone) and tone zone in the bridge.......or a JB with A8 magnet

I'm another JB in the bridge kinda guy. Not sure what I'd put in the neck, maybe some kind of Fralin or whatever is in my Soloist.

Isn't the SDS-1 what Jake E Lee used in his Charvel? Loved the neck tones he got out of those during the badlands era. Highwire lead kicks that in for sure, sounds so juicy and fat. I might try one of those next.

I use the Suhr Aldrich and Dimarzio Super D in my Strats.
Quarter Pound at the neck works great. It's loud enough to compete with those humbuckers.
I have an Dimarzio Injector neck I need to put in one. We'll see how that works.

It is...it's a great neck pickup for fat lead tones. Spanky clean tones are out though so it just depends on what you want.

So is the sds-1 the dimarzio answer to the quarter pounder?

It was around first, so it's more like the reverse of that. That said, they don't really sound too much alike...the Dimarzio is a bit thicker sounding and less dynamic. I prefer the Dimarzio for leads and the Duncan for cleaner stuff. The Duncan is probably a bit more versatile, but ultimately lacks the fatness of the Dimarzio for dirty lead work.

yep bang on .... the duncan has that whistle-ly strat tone (well thats what I call it anyway) and the dimarzio is more p90ish. I have found you can get some nice clean tones from both but you do need to lighten your picking
