My buddy just picked up a Gibson Les Paul studio lite. He really likes the guitar, but is not thrilled with the pickups. The stock 490R is muddy in this guitar. The bridge is a SD, we think its a JB, but its a bit hot for his tastes. He has an Ephiphone Sheraton and loves the Gibson '57 Classic and Classic plus pickups in there. He is mostly a blues, jazz, and classic rock player. He uses a Peavey classic 30 amp.

He would like to stay under $200 for the pair and would love to find a set used. 4 coil cables is a plus as we may add push pulls to split, but its not required. Anyway, here is what I have suggest he look into, looking for other suggestions.

- Gibson '57 classic and Classic plus (Found a used set of 2 '57 Classics for $130)
- Suhr SSV and DSV
- Gibson Burstbuckers
- Seymour duncan Seth Lovers
- SD Jazz / ???

I love the 57 classics, great set in my SG, not sure how they'd sit in a les paul, i would think some good PAFs would suit him best

PAF in the neck and a hotter PAF style bridge pickup, can't think of a specific pickup but there are a few choices out there, and they most certainly are findable used

We have a brand new Suhr DSV neck and bridge with chrome covers in stock?

Other cheaper pickups that would sound good would be a Duncan '59 set, or a '59 bridge and a Jazz neck.

i own currently, 4 studio lites...3 of them have the m3 electronics, but are rewired for my preferences. one is standard.

i did at one time own 5.

duncan screamin demon/hot stack neck/dimarzio evo neck, the evo is kinda hot for this guitar...and can be muddy, so if you use it, back it off a good bit...it really cleans up nice though if you ride the knob.

screamin demon/duckbucker bridge/ a2p neck - easy to use all these together..they all sound great.

duncan custom/hot stack strat neck/a2p neck -same as above..really easy to like them all...very clear in this guitar...the custom really defines and brings out the top end these guitars are known for..

and the other has matched zebra duncans wired standard les paul wiring: duncan custom/59' neck. the 59 is a great all around neck pickup. it's clear, big and defined.

they all sound phenomenal to my ears

the one i traded also had duncan custom bridge/hot stack strat/a2p neck and i think the pickups are what sold the guy on the trade.

the alnico 2 pro in the neck is a huge win in these guitars too..they match really well with the brightness and you can get some great violin/organ type tones with the right tube distortion.

i know a lot of guys dont like SD and dimarzio pickups around here, but, you asked about studio lites, and well, since i own a couple with differnt PUPS, i thought i'd chime in.

pickups i have tried in them too..and hated. duncan distortion (way too muddy) , dimarzio super D (nice and thick, yet, really bright..didn't like it with this guitar), invader (YUK!), pearly gates (wasn't too bad, just too weak honestly for my taste), alnico bridge (again, more of the same..not hot enough in the bridge), evo bridge (undefined and muddy, kills the tone of this guitar similiar to the DUncan distortion, but evo's breathe a little more in these guitars), tone zone (not much tone coming out of it...but a lot of top end/hi mid bite...which i thought was strange cause it sounds great in my Epi paul in the neck), paf pro (it's ok, but the 59 is better and the customs or demons win out for me every time).

all in all, you cant go wrong, obviously, imho with a demon or a custom in the bridge, and the a2pro neck.....those 3 just really match up with the guitar and also balance well between them for different tones, but not out of place with each other.

good luck.
also, i will tell you, i matched my first lite's pickups from SD up by using the tone chart...fuck, like 15 years ago in the catalog! found what i thought looked like it would sound good, and went and bought them..put them in, and lo and behold, were exactly what i wanted them to sound like.

dont let people fool you with the "chromyte"/balsa wood downtalk either..these guitars a pleasure to play, own and experiment with tones...they have a great personality and again, when matched up with the right pickups, and a set of graph tech saddles, they can sing, roar and shine with the best of them.

OH! i tried the jazz in the neck of my second Lite, and didn't like it, only because i was already attached to the A2pro sound in my other one....so i returned it and got the a2p....

the jazz is a really clear, BIG sounding pickup, but it's almost dead sounding in these guitars with heavy distortion if you dont adjust it close to the strings, but that muds/kills the bass.....almost like it wants to get up and go, but just cant, or wont, it can though, you just gotta run them close enough on the treble side and back off the bass side. very simliar to the 59, but something about the 59 in these guitars just sounds a little hotter and matches better tonewise and setup wise to me.

the jazz is a win though, and for classic rock or even just moderate distortion settings, with a boost, they really sing and have some color to go with the transparancy in the upper treble range. nice bite. i just may go get one!

you can't go wrong with a JB in these guitars either..i ran one for a while up front and in the neck on two of them...and the JB always got me compliments on my solo sound. very balanced sounding in the Lite, and they also have add some powerful, but undefined low end to match that already top endy guitar body

when i refer to the duncan alnico 2 pro, i dont mean the "slash" model. i mean the a2p1.
i never tried the slash one.

Thanks Yeti. I think the SD Alnico 2 pro sounds like a good way to go, its 4 conductor so you can split it. He can also keep his JB in the bridge for a while and see how that goes.

Found a black neck SD '59 4 conductor for $50, so he is going to try that. If he doesn't like it, I may try it in my Les Paul custom just for kicks...

great choice. can't go wrong.

you can run it further from the strings for a cleaner more open, clean/clean sound, or close (about 3/32" or so) like i do and get it sounding pretty hot and slammin big thick vocal sound!

Got my friend's guitar updated. We changed the pots and the cap at the same time. Really liking the '59 in the neck, its not muddy like the stock pickup was, it has a good full sound. I also found out the bridge pickup is a SD George Lynch Screamin' Demon https://www.seymourduncan.com/products/e ... eorge_lyn/

Overall I really like the '59, the screamin' demon is okay, its a little bright for my tastes and I would personally prefer something a bit hotter. We added push-pull pots on the tone to split the pickups and they both don't split that well, nothing like how the aldrich pickups split in my Les Paul.

you can run that demon really close to the strings and it ups the output a bit...i like it about 1/16 or 5/32 away, and each pole piece adjusted to reflect such. it still stays clear and is hot enough for me.

the 59 in the neck on these is a +1 winner warlock! tiger blood!
