Pickups for oddball Gibson

Guitar is a stock 1981 Gibson Victory MV2. The original pickups don’t suit for the music I write - a random shit blend of metal that nonetheless requires a bridge pickup that isn’t thin and weak as hell.

Pickups are pickguard mounted, so I am gonna just build out a new guard a la a Strat. The originals are also coil-split with a toggle, so that the configuration essentially becomes a Telecaster. I am not sold on it but it is nice to have the single coil options, so it’s a consideration.

Mahogany with a maple 5 ply neck. Currently leaning toward Dimarzio SD and Liquifire. I like Dream Theater but I also generally dislike sig shit on principle, so open to suggestions across the board.

I do like a Mesa Mark, tho, and am on the hunt a III. Anyway.

Let’s hear it!

Can we see pics of your oddball Gibson?

I'd rock the shit out of that. I think it's cool. The pickguard gives off Marauder vibes.
It's hard to go wrong with a Super Distortion. I don't know the Liquifire but the SD pairs well with an Air Norton or a 36th Anniversary in the neck.
Are you sticking with zebra? It might look cool with black pickups or maybe even nickel covers.

You know, I hadn’t considered black or nickel covers since it’s been zebra so long. But I kind of dig the thought and will have to consider it.

I’m gonna check out those other pickups you mentioned. Thanks!

I used to have one of these. I could be wrong, but I thought the body and neck were all maple. Don't know if that affects your pickup choice but it could...

I dig that these older Victorys have that pseudo-Firebird style headstock. It seems to fit the body better than the recent reissues with the Explorer headstock. It's just not right I tell you.

@GOHOINC I do believe you are correct, actually. The guitar is all Eastern hard rock maple, allegedly.

@chumbucket I totally agree. The OG headstock is great, and the Explorer shit on the reissue is just weak. Reissue, my ass. 😂
