John likes his Mesas

Well I hope that he stays away from the Mark V for the rhythm stuff. Didnt really care for the tone at all on the last album.

Interesting. I don't know much about DT to be honest. My friend is their engineer and he took the pic. How did their tone change?

Wat?!?!? His tone on the last two albums are by far his best and some of the best I've ever heard.

More gain. It's a lot thicker and more "metal" sounding.

He gets paid to hawk the Mark V but clearly favors, um, others...

He can prop the door open with the MKV. That's as far as it should go.

For me Scenes and Six Degrees are his best tones by far. I think a lot has to do with the engineer, recording process, mic techniques, etc. And less to do with the actual amps.

a guy who knows his amp tech told me that the Mark V he uses is modded, but didn't say how.

I really wanted to like the Mark V but just could not dial in a tight workable tone that made me want to play. Pertucci was constantly pushing that thing though.

Is that a short Mark IV head on top of the Mark V??

I 100% agree with this statement!

The Mark V is a pretty awesome amp when you use the right speakers. Also for the money you are getting a very versatile amp. It all comes down to the right amp/speaker combination. I had a Diezel Einstein before but I only had a V30 cab. I couldn't get rid of that amp fast enough. I am sure if I had a different speaker like a Greenback or something it would have sounded better.

I had an Einstein as well and hated the thing. It sounded downright terrible on my friends JCM800 4x12 Marshall with old 65's. And didn't sound good on an MC90 cab I had. I didn't try it on V30's but I didn't bother to go cab hunting for it.

Funny how a Herbert I tried sounded great on an old Mesa metal grill 4x12 with the EVM200watt/MC90 speaker combination. I mean, it sounded GREAT on that cab.

Scenes tone is awesome, but Six Degrees is probably my least favorite tone from him. Sounds like a Recto going through brand new V30's.
