I have a love/hate with Strats. Unlike the Gibson Les Paul, which I love everytime I pick it up no matter how old, pickups, etc., I battle with the Strat for some reason. :) I'll hear a song with a Strat sound and get an itch, but months later I'll find something I don't like about it, something it can't do sound-wise, etc.

I have come to the conclusion that I'm a Strat fan but the HSS version. I like to have single coils for cleans and bluesy stuff but I need a humbucker. I'm a humbucker guy and need it there.

Not only did the single coil sounds kick ass on the Shawbucker Strat, but the Shawbucker in the bridge sounded killer! It is based on a PAF so not an over-the-top metal pickup but definitely sounded great for rock/hard rock tones. The neck was awesome! It was so smooth and easy to play and reminded me a lot of Charvel necks which I love. Really easy to do soloing on, etc. Has jumbo frets which I'm a fan of as well.

Anyway, pretty impressive guitar and have nothing negative to say. Finish, feel, and tone were all great.

I have an '82 Les Paul Standard with original Tim Shaw pickups. It's an great guitar and sounds incredible. Not sure why all the Norlin era hate.

I'm not crazy about American standards. Don't like the necks. But I like the American Deluxe and the American Special. The Special has these big frets that I like and the Deluxe has a compound radius.
