Played a Peavey 3120 today

Not bad......much smoother and less buzzy than the XXX. All the same controls including the Dampening switch on the back. The passive eq controls seem to be a better option for this amp than the actives from the XXX. There is no crazy jump in volume between the two high gain channels like the XXX as well. Overall a solid amp for somebody for sure. It didn't give me gas but it didn't suck. One feature though which is still absent is a Presence control.....wonder why?
 
Wonder how much they will be over here. You can get a 6505 for decent coin still.
 
I thought the smoother less buzzy version of the XXX was the JSX? That was a great amp but it was a bit too refined for me...I actually prefer the XXX w/ EL34s and a good re-bias over the JSX.

As for the volume jump on the XXX....it wasn't between the two gain channels...it was between the clean and gain channels. The clean was always way too loud if you were running the master high. At least that's how it was on mine.

Some guy on HC corrected me about the volume jump between channels.....or at least according to him my opinion was wrong... ;)

Maybe it was more the radical different voicing between the crunch and ultra channels that threw off my perception of volume......anyway the high gain channels of the 3120 are as not a stark difference as they are on the XXX. But then again I was told that my opinion was wrong and this amp is just a XXX in different packaging..... :lol: :LOL:

It pretty much is the same thing but having owned one I can easily say that it sounded smoother than the one I had at least......my OPINION is that the XXX was a bit on the fuzzy side for my ears.. :lol: :LOL: :thumbsup:
 
I thought this amp had active eq's on the gain channels? That's what I read at least. The lack of presence and resonance controls does not bode well with me. I want to try one, but I don't think it will give my JSX a run for it's money.
 
Actually, the amp does have active EQ according to Peavey...on the gain channels.
 
Yeah I guess they do still have the active eq going on the gain channels.....I was misinformed on that....but...they seemed to be tweaked better or something.....the amp just seemed to be more refined bottom line...
