I'm still kind of disgusted with them and the Fryette/VHT name dispute. I'm not sure why, but I suppose it's out of loyalty to Fryette whome I think makes world-class amps and has excellent customer support. Anyway, I got to try this head out on a Diezel 4x12 cab using a single coil strat and a Les Paul.
I have to admit, the head was very good. It's not forgiving and does have a damned good quality sound. It reminds me a lot of a JCM800 2204 in some way. I can't describe it exactly but it has that kind of vibe. It's also got a little less distortion than a JCM800, but somewhere in that ball park.
It's a bit awkward in that to get gainy sounds, you have to plug into a third input that's arranged near the middle of the faceplate. There's a high & low input and then a gain input. The amp does great cleanish sounds and bluesy breakup.
I wouldn't compare it to a Hiwatt, but for the money ($1149), it's a damned good deal. I'm thinking of buying actually. Overall it's a pretty damned good amp. In the least, I'd say it exceeds expectations.
