The first guitar (in the pics this is the darker burst)I played was built by a guy named Scott Wilkinson who used to put ex nihilio on the headstock in Gibson font, but now uses Elineke, I believe his wife’s name? Anyhow, one piece mahogany body, very dark Brazilian fretboard, I think Honduran mahogany neck, relic’d in a tasteful manner, and some pickups and 21 tone jimmy page push/pull thing by jonesyblues and brandonwound pickups. They sounded good. The guitar overall was incredible, I would love to be able to build something like this. I guess he started these in 2009 and the first couple years were a little off, but after that his builds were stellar. The guitar I played, it Gibson was selling it, it would be many thousands of dollars. This is the darker burst of the two guitars I am posting pics of.

The second guitar was built by a Japanese company called crews maniac sound, and no expense was spared. when new, I think it was about $7000. All the finest most expensive woods were used and they followed an original 59 bursts specs and woods exactly. They used K&T Friction pickup models. These are handwound by the guy who created the dry z pickups. New the pickups alone are 1400 or 1500 bucks a pair. It’s his take on the original PAF from a 59 burst. They were a little hot, but were crystal clear and pretty touch sensitive. Every note in a cord rang out clearly. Like the Wilkinson build, this guitar sustained for a long while and the pickups just sang. The pickups, wow, they were amazing, K&T Friction models are the name, I also read that K&T Weeps are also incredible. Both these guitars excelled at all kinds of music I played through them.

Both guitars were better than the many Gibson’s I have owned or played. I think Scott Wilkinson only builds one, or maybe two guitars a year. I read that the first couple years, his builds had a minor problem here or there, but after he got rid of the initial cobwebs, he hit his stride and started building incredible burst replicas. The same can be said about the crews maniac sound. I want to grab one of these!!! Check out those pictures!!! God damn!!!!

Wow! Beautiful LPs. I had a Greco with the Dry Zs, they are a nice pickup for sure.

K&T pickups are amazing and do a lot of the heavy lifting in those guitars. But overall Crews aren't really that special. Fairly mass produced and can easily pick one up in the $3-4k range. Overall I prefer Historics, but especially when it comes down to finish work, Gibson has a big leg up on them.

some of the crews are fairly mass produced, but their highest end guitars like the one I played yesterday was from a run of 12. it was very, very nice.
