In the market for a new cab.

Interested in Mills Afterburner

However Ive been hearing good stuff about Ported Cabs.

Can anyone shed some light and explain the benefits, also list a few good companies that make these.

Bam!

Ported cabs come in two types. Tuned and de tuned. Tuned means the port accentuates certain frequencies. De tuned treats all frequencies the same.

Ported enclosures allow a speaker to have its full Xmax which is the length of total throw the cone has from front to back. Sealed cabinets percent this because the air pressure in the cab exerts force back onto the speaker.

The rest is feel and tone preference. I for one cannot go back to sealed even though i play modern metal, go figure.

Port City makes a good one. Last month I bought one locally from a guy who was using it with a Roadster. He didn't know how to dial into the cab properly though. With the Port City Wave cabs, you need to decrease how much bass is dialed into your amp because of how much bass comes out of the ported slot. The sound is pretty massive and it definitely sounds bigger than your normal 212 cab. It sounds amazing with my Marshall!

Thank you, those links will help quite a bit.

P.S.

I did search for Ported cabs and nothing showed up with that thread,

I have noticed its hard to find. Not sure why.

+100 on the port city. My 2x12os fn slays.

Does close micing a ported cab for recording purposes pose any special difficulties? Perhaps that depends on how a particular cab is ported. I get the impression Port City cabs are not ported in the same way as some other cabs are (e.g., EarCandy Buzzbomb).

Those who have used their ported cabs for recording, were the results better, worse, or about the same as compared to non-ported cabs?

They sound different miked up than sealed. I have only miked the speaker though some will mic the port also. Its all preference.

Ported cabs sometimes like a close mic and an ambient mic picking up the rear back tones. It's an experiment in experimenting :D

Sealed backs have more THUD!! when playing louder, more aggressive music. But the open, IME can sound equally as good, just different - they're more 'wide' sounding, somehow a bit louder and more dispersed, and definitely react to touch in a different way. YMMV.

Wouldn't mind a 2x12 ported with Celestions for $750. I like my current 2x12 cabs, but I have to stack them on top of each other to hear. Would be nice to carry one that had a more even sound dispersal, especially in the absence of a raised stage. Not that I have any gigs booked. I just like buying things that theoretically I need.

Forte is still doing a rig talk discount for the next few weeks. My 3d 2x12 came to $404.

Custom tolex and grill cloth too. With celestions available at avatar speakers for $99 you could fit well into that price point.

Go ahead buy something you don't need. :D
