It barely seems like a week goes by without some new product on the market, promising ultimate tones.

I often wonder if the tones we see today are really all that much better than what we might have heard 25 years ago. I think Im still dubious.

You get an AXEFX or a quad Cortex with a bazillion amps modelled in it...maybe its just me, but I dont think this is helpful (but Im not a professional studio player...). Do I really need an AC30 or a Hiwatt? Or a Fender Blues Junior? Not that these are bad amps, but I think its a massive distraction....there's a danger that I would just get too enthralled by all the options and my practise time would be reduced to tweaking and playing open A chords.

Maybe there's dudes that have these modellers who don't use 90% of what is in there? Anyway, and its just my opinion...

I think I'm of the train of thought where I really only need 5 or 6 core tones with a smattering of effects on top. Anyway, here are my patches (with references)....If I can get approximations of these Im generally happy...

1. Super Clean (Midnight - Eric Johnson)
2. Slightly Dirty Clean (SRV / Landau)
3. 70s era Rock ( Rory Gallagher - Bad Penny)
4. High gain Marshall style (John Norum / Skid Row / Lynch Mob)
5. Scooped out Metal (Exodus - Impact is Imminent)
6. 90s Style high gain ( AIC, Kings X Dogman)

What are yours? Maybe you dont even need 6?

I'm considering selling my Fractal FM9 MkII Turbo. I enjoy the sounds I'm getting from my tube amps, HX-Effects and my computer software rig.

I have several tones for different genres; a clean, rhythm, and lead with 1-2 variations for each genre set

1) '60s (Ric & Vox early Beatles clean/od, Hendrix rhythm/lead)
2) '70s Hard Rock (Fender/Marshall clean, Kiss '70s rhythms/lead tones; Sabbath)
3) '80s new wave (Fender clean, Johnny Marr (Smiths), Robert Smith (Cure), ambient and layered effects)
4) '80s hair metal / thrash (Vincent-era Kiss, Michael Sweet, Vito Bratta, Mustaine, Hetfield, Tom Keifer/Micheal Schermic (Cinderella), Sepultura (Cavalera bros era )
5) Death (mostly Schuldiner, Sadus, Paul Masvidal (Cynic), )
6) Fusion (still working on Allan Holdsworth tones, especially lead tones)
7) Prog / Modern tones (Petrucci, Tim Henson - I have their Neural Archetype plugins; and a JP-2C - which all help)
