How does the VHT 2:50:2 compare to the Mesa's newer version 2:50:2 power amp? I am interested in opinions of owners that have had both, and preferable had a chance to A/B them at the same time.

I have a 2/90/2 vht that you are more than welcome to borrow dude :)

I will take you up on that. I have the 2:50:2 I picked up that is the Mesa with EL34's and I would love to compare these two power amps side by side. I will give you a shout later this week before the weekend and see if we can meet up and I will get the amp back to you early next week.

Are you gigging this weekend?

...having never actually touched an all tube power amp...

Could you guys give a brief rundown of what you have played....and what you liked/disliked them?

I got in on the Mako preorder...and I'm wondering what I'll power it with...

For instance...I've heard great things about the VHT2150 and I've also heard some less than stellar reviews...
Are the 2502's or 2902's better or different?

I would go for the 2/90/2 with the Mako. Most of the Mako power sections are KT88.

Overall when it comes to the big names in power amps like VHT and Mesa it comes down to the options like tone shaping and what tubes you are running...what you like to hear from a power amp.

Never heard a bad review of a 2150, maybe not someone's cup of tea tone wise but that amp is just killer.

Find guys that play the same music as you and get their feedback.

I'm actually thinking about buying a 2/90/2 today for just that purpose - and I already have a 2/50/2.

I have a Carvin T-100.
It was cheap and sounds great. Maybe it's not as fantastic as a 2150, but it sounds really hi-fi at lower volumes and compresses really nicely when you push it.

It's what will be driving my Mak4.

few power amps I've owned or currently (*) own...

Mesa 50/50 - sounded ok, nothing special

*Randall RT 2/50 - can run nearly any octal power tube (KT66,88,90, 6L6, 6550, EL34, 6V6) easy to bias, can run two different power tube sets on each channel and footswitch them via midi. A really good sounding power amp. I'd take this over the mesa above any day.

Mosvalve (can't remember model, was high wattage) - sounded ok, not as good as tube amps IMHO. Ok for a budget or a wet power amp in a W/D/W setup.

Marshall Valvestate 80/80 - kicked ass for solid state, I liked it a lot. Still prefer tube amps though.

*Rocktron Velocity 120 - in between the Marshall and Mosvalve. solid state.

VHT 2/90/2 - kick ass. Nicest power amp I've owned - I really like it. Adds some authority and meat to any guitar tone.

Peavey Classic 60/60 - Great on a budget, but heavy. I preferred this over a mesa 50/50

Peavey Classic 120/120 - Holy hell, so heavy it's like carrying a piece of black hole material. Sounds great though - and they are cheap. If you don't have to move your gear much (or have roadies) and are on a budget, this is a GREAT poweramp. I prefer the VHT over this, but these are solid sounding amps.

WHERE?

Only a user-error-committing asshat could say something BAD aobut the 2150.

Sure, it might be heavy, tall, and not lowfi enough for 70's rock, but there's nothing really negative to say about it.

His quote was "uninspiring"...and I trust this guys judgment in tone as much as my own. Helluva player with some of the best gear you've ever seen. srsly.

I'm sure they're great amps...but the whole thought of Fryette as infallable..."Only a user-error-committing asshat could say something BAD aobut the 2150" is re-fucking-dick-u-lus

...have you ever played a Les Paul/Strat that sucked? Maybe it's the same? :aww:

I never said Fryette was infallible.

And "uninspiring" could stem from:

1. bad tubes
2. cheap cables
3. cold bias
4. other forms of not-so-obvious user-error.

You're correct. In your defense...you only mentioned the 2150.

But...in HIS defense...This guy builds/mods amps...I would bet that #1-3 are out.

cables? srsly?

FWIW, I hate Fryette's GP-3 preamp, plus Steve Fryette won't allow techs see the 2150 schematic.

I ended up having to learn the damn 2150 circuit and replace a burned out resistor after a stupid tech wasted a lot of my money trying to figure out the amp, prior to my crash course in tube amp tech.

so, yeah, I'm really just defending the amp as incredibly engineered, and incredibly accurate, yet still pleasing.

FWIW, it doesn't have colouration that many seek.

Actually, I don't plan on buying anything else from Fryette  :( :aww:

So, in a way, I'm back on the same page.

I'm rambling.

I appreciate that.

The lack of coloration may be exactly what he was referring to. Is that also the reason for the "dry" comments I hear from everyone? I always thought the "dry" comment referred to the saturation in VHT preamps...

So does the 2150, being "dry" feel stiff...like a SS amp...or will it feel like a tube amp?

VHT/Fryette guys, Can anyone compare and contrast 2/90/2 and 2150 to Mesa 2:100?

MESA Strategy 500 ..... that's the one if you ask me.
