Hi all,

Just ordered a Bogner Fish.

Would my existing 100b be a good power amp for it, or would that even make sense?

I have a lead on a used VHT-2150, but am afraid it may be overkill for the volume we play?
and may not have enough "sag", squish or warmth.

I toyed with the idea of a MOSVALVE (mainly for reliability/consistency). Also thinking
about the VHT 2-50-2. Someone said the 2-50-2 was too "small sounding".

I really don't need *stereo* power. A mono power amp would do just fine.

The kind of tones I'm looking for would be maybe:
Alice in Chains, STP, The Cult, RATM, EVH Fair Warning era, G-N-R, Dokken (Under Lock & Key),
Soundgarden, Zeppelin, etc. I love Chris Poland's lead tone too.

To me, these have some warmth in them, not super tight metal, but not flubby.

Ideally, something in-between the Bogner 100B (or Classic) and the 101B would be a great tone.

Perhaps I barked down the wrong tree all-together with the fish, but we'll see. :)

Alice and Chains and STP both used VHT power amps, AIC used 2150's and STP used 2100's... but if you ask anyone they will tell you the the best power amp out of all the VHT's are gonna be the 2150's and the 2100's... hands down. If you can even find a 2100 out there right now. My 2150 is pretty much never going to dissapoint even at low volumes or loud, and your always going to keep the resale value on it for its condition. Try out your fish on the power section of the Bogner and tell us what you think about it, and good luck with your search.

IMO, the VHT 2150 IS the perfect pair for the Fish. It's huge, tight, and bright in all the right places.

Also, the 2150 has great volume controls. If you can't get it to sound good at low volumes, the problem isn't the amp.

That said, I REEEEALLLY like Rivera power amps, right now. They are similar to the 2150, yet, warmer, easier to repair, cheaper, and further off the radar. not as bright as the VHT stuff either.

FWIW, I generally prefer LARGER power amps. I just feel those big transformers breath and punch like a good bourbon.

I don't think that's true. Pretty sure it went from Mosvalves straight to Mesa 2:ninety's

BUT

Fish + 2150 is a match made in heaven. They were made for each other.

+1 Gene, maybe you should give another 2150 a good home and life... I can make it happen!!! Does purple suit you well?

  Even in my crazy GAS days, one 2150 was enough.

My black one is very nice though.

Now, if you had a blue one, I would seriously consider it.

Well that sucks, but I swore that someone told me that AIC used 2150's... my bad. Heard good things about your Fish and 2150 so far Gene, should I be in the market to dump my Herbert if I were to compare the 2 side by side? I might just be looking out for a fish now and dumping some gear soon... but probaly not the Herbert!!!

I have this bad feeling that Im gonna miss this 2150 when its gone and be desperately searching for another in this kind of condition but not be able to find one. I had to search for this one for awhile and got lucky when I did find it, especially in this condition.

1. Hold on to your 2150 if it's in excellent shape.

2. As for Herbert vs. Fish.

A. Herbert is modern high gain, Fish is NOT.
B. However, used, mint reissue Fishies can be had for $2200 right now. It might be a good opportunity to buy one.

Unless you like 80's/90's medium-high gain smooth or thrash or hair, modded marshall tones, you might want to stick with your Herbert.

I should buy that 2150 just because I am teh Digital Jams.

Purple?

Purple?

Yes, it has you written all over it, Scott.

I definitely use those tones the fish puts out... but will have a hard time dumping some of my gear to get one. This 2150 is one that will probably double in price in the next 10 years because of its condition... you just dont see them like this at all.

Blue looks good, but purple makes it sound better... haven't you heard?

Thanks for your input guys!

There are actually two 2150's I have leads on LOL.

By "Tight" I wonder if that's good? What I really love about
the "101B" (not the 100b) is the note squish/bloom for leads.
That amp is just too grainy though for me.

I need to fill the soundstage as I'm the only guitar in the mix.

Have not heard/seen the Rivera power amps..are you talking
about older ones?

OMG, are you talking about the Hamer 320's!??
I just looked on that website, that thing is HUGE.

MONO would be ideal for me...but I doubt I'm going to find that.
The only mono one I recall is the Soldano one.

yes.

And, the Hammer 120 sounds just as good, just not as loud.

both power amps take 6550's, 6L6's, EL34's, etc.

I like the VHT 2100. I have a Chrome, Purple and Black one. The 2150 has more cut and definition to my ear, but the 2100 has more harmonics and warmth. Since I have been using EVMs and Soldano stuff I don't need the cut. LOL

I've heard the 2100 is the bomb...but "8" power tubes.. ack!

Do you find that there is any give with the 2150's? Or are they super stiff?

I wish they had a mono offering.
