:? :D
so i've been thinking i wanted to get a decent sounding practice amp again. i'm using a Danelectro Dirty 30 w/ a metal zone now  whatever i get could get used in the studio as well.

i used to have a THD Univalve head. i loved this amp for at home use and just general fiddling around. so i thought maybe i'd get another one cause they're fun little amps that you can get a cool/wide array of sounds from using different tubes. i figured i'd maybe pickup a 1-12 cab from Avatar or something cause they're only about $240.

then i ran across a used VHT Pitbull 45 -112 combo. so i started doing a bit of research and they sound like they'd be pretty cool. lots of features like most VHTs. and has reverb too. i like the idea of this amp also cause its a combo with everything kinda self contained and on the rare occurance i might wanna hook up and jam with someone, it'd be pretty easy with seemingly alot of tweakability.

how does the 45 sound at bedroom volumes? the 50/CL sounded killer, does this one too? :? :?

i could boost either amp if it doesn't have "metal" gain, so i'm not worried there. i tend to play less heavy stuff at home anyhow, unless i'm working on something specific for the band.

the VHT would be a bit less expensive which would be good too.

what say ye?

I have never played the 45 combo, but the first VHT I owned was a 50/12/212 combo and it sounded AWSOME at low volume. More of a rock amp than a metal amp, but as you said, with a boost it woll work just fine.

Given that the master volumes on every VHT I have played were superb, I would bet the 45 would work out just fine.

No opinion on the THD as I have never played one.

Something else to consider would be an Engl Screamer combo. Never played one of these either, but I would be willing to bet it sounds great at low volume and wouldn't NEED a boost.

thanks Tony, i'll look into the Screamer a little bit.
i kinda like the idea of the VHT pitbull 45. i like some el84 amps, this might be the ticket for home use since i doubt i could use an el84 amp live a whole lot.

I really didn't care for my Engl Screamer combo. It was very low gain for my tastes. Good overdrive and clean tones, but just didn't get there for metal. Voodoo Amps just came out with their Witchdoctor combo. Pricey, but looks like it will sound pretty stellar.

Interesting.

I never played the combo, but had the head version and it had plenty of gain for metal, etc.

If you can't get enough gain out of an ENGL Screamer then there's something wrong with the amp or you. IMO it's a great amp for metal but I don't like it for anything else really, same with every other ENGL I've tried. The Screamer combo did seem to be rather light on the bottom end and sounded much better with an ENGL 1x12 extension cab.

i get this and can't click to play, it just sits there. link your page?

Hold down your "CTRL" button while clicking the link (until the player pops up). Either that or turn off your pop-up blocker.
