Hi there

I have a microphonic pre amp tube in slot V1 on the VH4. At present, all the tubes are stock (Ruby's I believe), and I need to get another tube. The thing is, there are so many options, I'm completely stuck! There are Ecc83, 12Ax7, 12Au7, the list goes on and on! I just want a decent sounding, preferably cheap (between £10 and £20 each) to put in the amp and start rocking out again...

Does anyone have any recommendations for V1 and V4 of the Pre amp?

Any info would be greatly appreciated guys.

Thanks

Use a ECC83=12AX7=7025 type. (100% gain)
The brand - well thats a question of your taste.
Chinese: neutral in a positive sense
JJs: a bit darker IMO
EI: sparkling treble

If you want to reduce the gain you can use a
ECC81=12AT7, which has 60% of a ECC83 gain.

If you need something in-between those two types, you'd want a 5751, which has 70% of an ECC83s gain.

My tip: order several brands and find the one you like the best.

A ECC82=12AU7 isn't recommended to be used in Diezels (20% gain).

I can save you some trouble! I've tried many, and the best I've heard with the VH4 the Chinese (Shuguang 12AX7C) tubes. In my understanding this is exactly what the Ruby 12AX7s are as well. The others resulted in a sound that was too dark. The EI might be interesting to try though if it has more treble.

It is a well known secret that Diezel uses chinese since ages now . . . ;)

Not sure if that continues though . . .

Btw: older VH4s (had a '98) like those EIs in some of theor sockets.

If You want a non microphonic tube for V1
install a ECC83 JJ. The rest is 12AX7 Chinese.

Hey Peter!!

Don´t know if you´ve already covered this, but what tubes do you recommend in the preamp section? And whats the difference between the sockets? What´s the stock layup?

Have a great week and THANK YOU for the VH-4....you´re my savior!
