A local shop has a 1969 Marshall 4x12 cab loaded with all orignal Greenbacks. From what i've been told the speakers need new cones.

Condition wise it definitely looks 44 years old, tolex is pretty beat up.

What is the value of this?

Its priceless

Sorry, I have no idea. The pricing on those is all over the map :aww:

If the speakers need to be reconed, they are not worth much IMHO (the reason they're desirable in the first place are the Pulsonic cones). If the cab is beat, I could see someone charging around $1,000. But without the speaker cones, you're just buying an old birch box IMHO.

You need to play it. Maybe it sounds good as is and indeed doesn't need a recone? If you love it, get it and try to stay under 1000$, then you're golden.

If you don't like it, get an EVH5150III 4x12, they sound awesome for 500 bucks.

Agreed on the old speakers, that is the main draw with those old cabs. If speakers are toast, then for the most part, you are buying the old wood 4x12.

Just out of curiosity, what do THEY think it is worth?

An original 1969 Marshall cab with original speakers in rough shape is good for $1500, less with bad speakers. The cab itself is worth $500-700.

As some have mentioned, the value is all over the place on these, and really, it boils down to what you are willing to pay. If you are definitely considering that cab, be sure to open it up & do a full exam of the interior, preferably with the speakers removed. Look for cracks in the baffle board, suspect joinery ( which may be visible from the cab exterior where tolex should be ) and mold/mildew from possible water damage. Also be aware of any missing original hardware-like those very hard to find t-nuts & speaker mounting screws.

They havent come back to me on a price yet.

I'll be sure to check it out thoroughly before any potential purchase.

I'll get some pics next time i'm there.

The thing is it's a very strange shop that sells a mixture of things. Eveything from guitar strigns to old WW2 shell casings. So i'm wondering if they will come back with a cheap price being unaware of value etc..

Run away from it if it has mold. It is almost impossible to remove it from a cabinet and you could get your family sick if you put the cab in the house. I have seen and passed on a lot of those old cabs that had the casters off, sat on someone's basement floor when the sewer backed up and ugh..........

I payed around 1500 for my '69. All original 25watts 75hz... Cab had never been opened when i bought it. All speaker worked, and the cab in general sounded warm and creamy... in the sense that adding a reverb would spoil the whole thing... just sounded pure and vintage warm. Made my marshall sound like a marshall.
Super fucking beat up, smoked, long rock life, imo awesome looking original cream tolex.
Tubes for wheels were intact "they cost a shitload to replace" so make sure they are there...

It looks shocking, but i'd never ever, ever restore it.. this is rock history.

Awesome

To add onto the posts above about missing bolts/hardware and mold...make sure it has original speakers...they'll have date codes similar to JB25 (June 25, 1969) and frame codes of T1221, or T1281.

But if the cones are toast, they're just frames now, and worth about $25 per frame. If the cab tolex and cloth is beat up, but solid (no issues with cracks, mold, hardware, etc) then the most it's worth is $5-600.

Pics of the inside would definitely help. Post them, or email them to me (make them less than 500k per pic please) and I can give you a better idea.

Good luck.

Jim
