I'm ordering a new cab, and tried to match speakers based on their frequency graphs and vital info since I have no experience with a Private Jack or Man O War. Instead of the Man O War, perhaps a Governor, Wizard, or another Private Jack might do the trick? I'm looking for rock type tone, but versatile enough to do metal

What do you guys think of a Private Jack in the bottom, and a Man O War in the top in a vertical 212 built to the specs of a Mesa Recto 212?

I had PJ's a while back. They started out great, but as they broke in, they got all weird. Turned me off to Emi's.
But I'm expecting a Splawn 4x12 with Small Blocks (Eminence). I haven't heard one bad thing about those speakers.

Are you dead set on the emi's? and I think the Man o War is very simular to the T75 IIRC. Either way, Id recommend using your ears instead of your eyes when tone searching. Those charts can be misleading sometimes.

I would have used my ears, but I live in barren wasteland in terms of finding speakers. Trying a bunch isn't an option outside the typical Celestions which I'm not too big on(other than Greenbacks).

Seems like the general consensus on Man O Wars is that they are similar to T75s.

What are the Wizard and Governor similar to?

the governor is like a V30 and the wiz is similar to a g12h30. supposedly.

no experience with the gov, personally, but i have a wiz in my peavey classic 30 and i absolutely love it. it seems to do just about everything well. lots of low end, nice, dare i say chimy, high end, and mids that are nice and present without being overkill. does well in open back combo, and in a closed back. lots of low end that way, though. higher wattage rating, too. 75 or 80 watts i think.

the wiz is also a very high efficiency speaker, which you may want to consider, as it might overpower another less efficient speaker in the same cab.

takes a while to break in - if you grab a new one, give it time.

good luck.

I have a v30 4x12 and a Recently switched Wizard 4x12..
This comparison video represents what my ears hear with the difference between the 2..
I do not think my Wizards are fully broken in yet but I am very happy with them so far they sound more clear and do not break up as soon as my V30's

ah I see. Ive never understood why most guitar shops only carry celestion and not Eminence.

I had the Man-O-War/Governor combo in a Splawn OS 2x12. I never got a long with it. Got boomy very fast. I've also heard the Eminence speaker have a long break in period, especially for someone like me who rarely plays at anything past basement levels! :D

Actually I sold the cab with Hellatones in it (love those speakers!) and I still have the Eminence speakers. Tried selling them once, but no takers.

It's almost as mind boggling as Blackstar not to selling their products in Canada, but that is for another thread.
