Sometimes my 24 stays in tune for days with no problems. But some days it just won't stick. All I gotta do is use the whammy a tiny little bit, and the G string raises a bit, and then after some time the B falls slightly.

Does anyone else have this problem? Or maybe even some advice to fix this?

It's really annoying, because a friend of mine has the same guitar, and he hasn't tuned it since christmas 2007.

Get a good setup. You probably need some nut sauce and stuff as well. I had that problem with a strat, after a good setup and adjustments, it plays super and stays in tune!

He's right. Almost definitely the nut. Get it filed correctly and use some graphite or nut sauce. Works like a charm.

Yeah I had a guy do it, and was working for a while (set up is still great on it, playing wise), but now it seems to be going back to that nasty habit.
Someone recommended me WD-40, which I have used for the bridge, and it seems to have an affect... But it doesn't fix it.

I guess I should take it to a Luthier...

Aha.

Cheers for the info. Will try that out!

Would you recommend I get a pro to file it? Or will a bit of reading and googling and a file do the job?

You can do it yourself and I do recommend most of a do it yourself approach. That being said, I don't mind on occasion to take my axes to a competent tech to get a set up. Especially with season/humidity changes. Once you get a good set up, then you can do minor tweaks and adjustments yourself. Good luck!!!

Thanks for that

I will have to give it a go...

Wow, never played a PRS that doesn't stay perfectly in tune. They have the most stable guitars I've played.

How is the PRS trem? Does it stay in tune realtively well after dive bombs? I don't expect it's like a Floyd, but is it better then a vintage trem? Can you pull up on it slightly?

I've never owned one and every one I've tried has had the bar off...

Well all PRS' that I have tried (apart from mine) stays in tune perfectly. When they are set up right they pull up exactly 1 whole tone.
With regards to dive bombs... You can go down, but no where near as far down as a Floyd.

Neither have I... Only mine

I am sure it will sort it self out with some of the tips I have received.

It's really really annoying though, as it taints the whole experience of owning it... For me and my playing, and taste, it's the perfect guitar. Apart from the sharp G string

The tuning issue should be sorted soon though, so my baby can come out and play!

How are you winding your string at the post? My guitar used to fall slightly out of tune alot because of the string slipping.

Mine has a trem and locking heads, so that method won't work too well.

On the PRS I pull the string through as hard as I can and lock, to have the least amount of winding.

Is this a recent occurance or has it always happened? Does it happen with newer strings? Old strings can be a motherfucker to keep in tune or intonated, no matter how clean you keep them.

It's worse with old strings, but it also happens with new strings (albeit not to the same degree).

Guys... The problem went away when I filed the nut a tiny bit, and started colouring it in with a pencil (IKEA).

Thank you so much for the help! I can not describe how happy I am with the guitar now. Especially now that I have miraculously found the perfect action for it (that tiny tiny bit of filing the job).

Thanks again.

Hi, I'm new here...I have the same exact problem with my 24...do you think a new nut would help instead of filling the current nut?

Thanks

It is more than likely an issue with the nut. I'd take it to a good luthier, and have them take a look. They may be able to properly slot the nut without having to replace it. That said, it's not too expensive to have a good bone nut cut, and if done properly, will eliminate these binding issues.

Big Bends nut sauce changed my life... no bullshit... I know there are other products out there that people on here swear by as well, and I'm not discrediting those... but honestly, I can't live without it... speaking of which, I actually need to order some more..

The first time I used it I literally laughed out loud the second I was done changing strings...

Also, on an unrelated note, the new Ernie Ball Cobalt strings hold tuning better than ANY strings I have EVER used... I'm obviously not endorsed or anything, just saying, if you have a guitar that is giving you some trouble and is fussy, can't hurt to maybe try a different brand of string with that guitar...

But seriously, get yourself some nut sauce STAT!

Also... another thing I'm a huge fan of is the Tremol-No... if you don't use your trem that often they are mandatory IMO... with it locked your guitar will NEVER go out of tune... or you can have it "dive only" if you'd like... I'll never own another floating trem guitar without one...
