i now have 2 completely different PRS...and thinking bout changing pickups
twoPRSside.jpg

1994 standard 24 - mahagony body/neck with the HFS/Vintage Bass pickups

ive never been a fan of ceramic magnets...and the HFS...well...i dont think ill keep it for long. the vintage bass is ok...but id prefer something like a Paf pro/59 style pup (which i already have on another guitar) what after markets have you guys tried out in mahagony body PRS? i dont want another guitar with a JB.
i want something that isnt mega high output (i want to work the amp more) and can suit all styles.

1990 CE24 - alder body w/maple top/neck with Seymour Duncan Custom5/Jazz pickups.

for purely aesthtic reasons...i want nickel covers and to change back the pickup rings to beige..im happy to get some nickel covers and install them BUT i have an opportunity to trade for a set of Dragons (not sure Is or IIs...whatever comes in a CE22)

anyone tried Dragons in a 24 fret model? ie was there any reason they come stock in the 22 fret versions.

decisions decisions...any suggestions?

In the all mahog... Might be worth hunting down some PRS 57/08 pups. I had a love/hate relationship with them, as I'm a high-output modern rocker. But for warmth, clarity and sustain, they kill. Here's a YT vid of my former Custom 24 (I'm a 22 fret guy, so she went on the block )

I'm not sure on the CE, as I've never owned an alder bodied PRS. All mine are mahog. The Dragon I pups are relatively hot, but very organic and you can do the typical "8" on the volume knob to calm them down. It's fun to have the extra "kick" of another notch or two of volume. Downer though, Dragon 1s are NOT covered pups. Hell, maybe sticking a cover on them might calm them enough for you. Here's my '95 Custom 22 with Dragon 1s. They are also a hair on the dark side, but the alder body may counteract that. Hence why they were stock for mid 90s CEs and Custom 22s.

For the mahogany one, id look at the PRS 59/09(similar to 57 but bit darker, more output and clearer neck) or the bareknuckle VHII or Rebel yell.

I had a Suhr Aldrich set installed in a PRS Hiland I had. Sounded really good!!

If your interested in trading pickup rings, I have a set of the beige and was looking for black to replace them with.
Aloha, Rob.

I have 57/08's in a Single Cut and love them. Beautiful clarity, no false midrange to get in the way. I have just started using a BKP Mule in a bolt on, pieces/parts guitar and that seems to be a clear, higher output (than the 57/08) pick up. I've heard great things about BKP's, and the Mule has not disappointed.

BTW, born and raised in Ewa Beach.

Aroha!

This is Sacred Rite Mark right?
Used to give lessons at hot licks behind tower records?
I took a handful of lessons from you back in the day.
In fact Dan (from hot licks now dans guitars.) has been after me to use some bkp mules. Just got a set to put in my prs from him.
Small world.
You might not recognize Ewa beach now. No more sugar cane, all sub divisions now.

Yeah, das me. My dad says the same thing about Ewa Beach... all houses and golf courses now.

The guitar that has the Mule in it is actually Dan's.  Original Charvel neck from the 80's, Fender headstock, Tom Anderson Body, Floyd... Killah!
