Okay...a coworker brings me his PRS SE Standard (black satin/stealth) guitar to check out. I take it home...polish the shit outta the frets with gorgomyte, along with the non-intonating aluminum bridge...throw on some new strings, do a setup, etc...Looks brand new now. The thing is fun to play!

I was ripping out SLAYER/METALLICA/SHOTGUN MESSIAH riffage and has some descent tones for a cheaper guitar. I seriously played thrash for 2 hours straight last night. Holds tunings very well. The 25" scale length was kinda cool.

But, I think my honeymoon is over once I switched to my clean channel....seems like i can really notice a difference in tone on the clean channel. :D

Maybe its just not a versatile model? Anyway...was wondering if any of the other SE models are good or better than the one I played?

I own 3 of them at the moment

I have the standard in a tremolo version, super cool guitar to play, i quite like the clean tones (on the neck pickup which is stock) , i put a Suhr DSV+ in the bridge, which really sings despite the fact that i had to get the neck fixed (broken headstock), it's what i play most of the time at home

I've got a soapbar II guitar that i got for cheap, which is super resonant, and killer to play , something about the bridge they use maybe i dunno, but the soapbars are some of the best sounding hi-output p90s i've heard, i use it in both of my bands, has essentially become my main guitar

and more recently i got a PRS SE EG as a project guitar, strat like with versatile tone options, i changed out the pickups, (p90 , single, humbucker bridge config) which is quite nice, but can't seem to get into it, after upgrading everything just don't really want to play it so much, so it's looking like it might go on the evilbay soon, plays and sounds great mind you

Imo for the price they make some fantastic guitars, even the tremolo systems are great at that price point, the padded gigbags are quality too, if you want something a bit different try grabbing one of the older discontinued soapbar models, fantastic guitars

I'm yet to try a bad one shall we say, buy used, swap out the pickups / tuners (grover 406c are drop in replacements) and you're good to go

Ive never been a fan of the SE models. They are what they are, a decent inexpensive guitar, but its not a real PRS by any means.

I think they look great and seem well made, but I have never liked one enough to plug one in.

I was looking forward to buying a SE Custom 24 for months. This is the new model that came out last year. Sam Ash had some SE models, but no Custom 24. I played 4 different models and they all played like shit. Maybe they all needed a set up. They just did not resonate well. Buzzing all over the neck. Now 5 months prior. I played an SE. It played really well. In fact it felt as good as a real one. I ended up buying an LTD relic Eclipse for half the price of the SE and it played really well.

From my original post...my coworker wants to sell it. Price check?

I think he said he wants $400, but I am thinking it is worth around $250-$300. New i think these went for $499 with the gig bag.

I have a SE custom 24 and I love it. Feels good and it plays well so I am satisfied. But I do want to get my hands on an actual custom 24 at some point :D

I have the Santana SE model and it plays like a dream. It feels better than some US made PRS's I've played. The quality of SEs can vary from guitar to guitar though. I played through a 10-12 different models before finding a really nice example. The pickups are the weak link to the line. They can sound a bit flat at lower volumes. If you swap in some quality pups, you can potentially have a monster of a guitar for a reasonable price.

Planning on getting an SE Custom 24 soon. 2012 on they have coil taps, which makes it a pretty insanely versatile guitar for the price, plus they play great. I didn't really like any of the other SE's that much, just don't like the neck shapes, but the Custom 24 is great, much thinner neck than most of the other models (that I've played anyway).

In my opinion they're better than pretty much any other $700 (new) guitar I can think of.

They only ordered one or two for most stores, probably because the 2011's ended up sitting around for a while (probably 'cause they made/bought them in that ugly orange color). I think the 2012's sold a lot better though (at least in my store).
